2BIOGRAPHY Zane Scotland is the latest success
story from Surrey, who has already proved he is
more than capable of competing at the highest
level. In 1999, he represented the England Mens
team at the age of 16, making him the youngest
ever player to represent the full England team.
In the same year, he became the youngest player
ever to have qualified for the Open Championship
at Carnoustie. In 2000, Zane gained his first
Home International Mens cap and he also
captained the unbeaten Great Britain Ireland
Boys team. During this time he won the Peter
McEvoy Trophy, the Nations Cup and the Sherry
Cup. Zane topped the year off by reaching the
quarterfinals of the British Amateur
Championships. Zane broke the Course Record at
the Wisley Golf Club in 2001 and also became the
lowest scoring amateur at the Surrey Open. He was
victorious in the Juan Carlos Tailhade Cup in
Argentina, proving to all that he could win on a
global stage. 2001 was rounded off with an
impressive unbeaten record at the Home
Internationals. 2002 was a fantastic year for
Zane, taking 6 titles in six different countries
over the 12 months. A major milestone was
achieved when Zane was victorious in both the
Spanish and Portuguese Amateur Championships. As
the Portuguese Amateur Champion, Zane
automatically qualified for the Algarve Open de
Portugal, where he made the cut in very testing
conditions. An impressive performance at the
Australian MasterCard Masters at the end of 2002,
where he made the cut alongside many of the great
names of golf, has shown that Zane has both the
ability and the determination to reach the
pinnacle of professional golf. Certainly, the
international circuit shows no sign of
intimidating Zane whilst he was in Australia he
also took the prestigious Dunes Medal amateur
title, beating the challenge of Australias best
amateurs. Zanes outstanding amateur record gave
him great confidence as he transitioned into the
professional ranks, where many predict a bright
future for this young star. Unfortunately, Zane
suffered in 2003/2004 from a neck/back injury
sustained in a road accident, but through much
courage and determination he fought back to
regain his physical fitness. In 2005, he
finished 3rd at Wensum Valley on the Europro
Tour shooting an impressive course record 8
under par (64) in his final round. He performed
consistently well throughout 2005 and was unlucky
not to win the Europro Tour Championship a total
score of 9 under par resulted in him finishing a
close 2nd. Zane was then unlucky not to win his
first Professional event in May 2006 when he lost
in a playoff at the Oceanico International Open
in Portugal. This result, a 4th place at the
Europro Tour Championship and a string of other
fine performances saw him finish 17th on the
Europro Order of Merit. On the Challenge Tour,
Zane accomplished 5 top-30 finishes including a
12th place at the Thomas Bjorn and ended the
Kazakhstan Open in 9th spot. His consistent
performances at the end of last year guaranteed
his Challenge Tour Card in 2007. Since then he
has played some excellent golf. He finished 10th
in the Oceanico Developments Challenge Tour event
in June, and followed that up with a 14th place
in the Credit Suisse Challenge in Switzerland a
month later. Then, having qualified in 1st place
for the French Open, he played four superb rounds
at Le Golf National to finish tied 12th, his best
ever finish on the European Tour. His third round
partner at the French Open, Thomas Bjorn, said
that Zane was the best young player he has seen
in a long time, which signifies his resurgence
back to the top of his game. Zane has had an
amazing season from his 6 starts on the European
Tour, and following his tied 4th place at the
British Masters, he has achieved enough prize
money to guarantee a 2008 European Tour card,
joining the illustrious group to achieve such a
feat in less than 7 events including Sergio
Garcia, Paul Casey and Adam Scott.
