  • Learn Exactly How Architectural Cast Stone is
    Made
  • Stone architecture has an old world charm and
beauty that have sustained since ancient times.
It gives a home a very stately look that speaks
of status and class. Stonework is the most
popular choice for laying decorative flooring,
    fireplaces, mantels, pillars, patios, building
    facades, porticos, garden fountains, pathways,
etc. There are two main manufacturing techniques
used in creating cast stones wet casting and
    semi-dry.
  • Method of making wet cast stones
  • A Wet Cast Stone is an architectural concrete
stone that is precast to look like natural a
stone. The cast stones are easily available as
they can be created on demand. They are less
porous than some of the natural stones. Hence,
over the centuries, wet cast stones have gained
    popularity.

  • Wet Cast Manufacturing is a simpler method of
creating architectural stones. Using the same
machinery one can create a wide range of cast
stone products. This is very advantageous for a
    small-scale manufacturer because his overheads
and operating costs are lower. This manufacturing
    method is very simple
  • Pre-determined measures of cement and
rough-grained sand are mixed with water and other
    binding and/or hydrating materials,
  • This mixture is poured into moulds that are
    placed on vibrating tables,
  • The vibration allows air bubbles to escape,
  • The surfaces are evened out with a rake to give
    the stones a smoother look,
  • The moulds are then moved to a flat area and left
    to cure.
  • Large companies involved in the manufacture of
wet cast stones usually focus on stones with
unusual combinations that look different from the
standard wet cast stones. They mix a variety of
colored concrete and use their own customized
moulds to create architectural stones with
extraordinary designs and patterns. This is
usually the high-end variety of wet cast stones
used in building construction. They are exclusive
in the look meant for the elite.

  • Semi-dry cast stones as an alternative
  • Semi-dry cast stones are more in demand than wet
cast stones as they are hardier. They are used in
places where there are greater chances of wear
and tear but fewer loads like
  • Outer façade,
  • Garden,
  • Pathway,
  • Verandah,
  • Patio, etc.
  • The purpose for the use of stone is more
aesthetic than load bearing. As the name Semi-Dry
Manufacturing suggests, these stones are made
from naturally moist mixtures without adding more
water. The combination of raw materials is
decided on how grainy you want the finished
product to look. A smoother finish would require
a mixture of finer sand. For the rough and
natural look your semi-dry stones need coarser
    sand.

5
  • Wooden moulds are used to create different types
of semi-dry cast stones. The moulds are kept in a
face-down position. The mixture is poured in, and
pneumatic rammers are used to press the mixture
firmly into the moulds. This ensures that all the
air bubbles are let out otherwise there will be
ugly gaps in the finished stone. This method has
an advantage over wet cast stones as the final
pieces are more consistent and the products have
    a higher level of finesse.
