His followers were referred to as Cavaliers or
Royalists
  • They were usually rich nobles and landowners.
  • They tended to be from the country, especially
the North, West, and in Wales.
  • Your position in the army was determined by your
    birth, not by your talent.
  • They had long curled hair, and were fashionably
    dressed.
  • They believed that The Church of England was
    the Anglican Church.

Parliamentary Forces Rallied Around Oliver
Cromwell
  • The Parliamentary supporters were from the South
    and East, including London.
  • They tended to be lower and middle class.
  • They dressed in a very plain fashion.
  • Their hair was cut short, hence the nickname
    Roundheads.
  • They believed that The Church of England
should be in the Puritan model.

5
Why were the Roundheads so successful?
  • They formed the New Model Army.
  • These soldiers drilled hard and followed strict
rules against drinking, swearing, and robbing.
  • The men chosen as officers were good fighters.
