- A verb tells when something happens.
- The tense of a verb lets you know whether
something happens in the past, present, or in
the future.

4Spelling the Present Tense
- For most verbs, add s.
- For verbs that end with s, x, z, ch, or sh, add
es. - For a verb that ends with a consonant and y,
change the y to an i and add es.

- For most verbs, add -ed.
- Verbs ending with e, drop the e and add -ed.

- Verbs ending with a single vowel and a consonant,
double the consonant and add -ed. - Verbs ending with a consonant and y, change the y
to an i and add -ed.

9The Past with Helping Verbs
Use the helping verb has, have, or had with the
past form of most verbs.
- With singular subjects, use has.
The kitten has played with the string.
She has baked a cake.
The boy has eaten his lunch.
10The Past with Helping Verbs
With plural subjects and I or you, use have.
The cats have played with the yarn.
They have won the game.
You have ridden a tricycle.
I have worked on a computer.
11The Past with Helping Verbs
With either singular or plural subjects, use had.
He had scored 26 points already.
They had lost their soccer game.
12Irregular Verbs
- Verbs that do not add -ed to show past tense are
called irregular verbs. - Because they do not follow a regular pattern, you
must remember their past tense and past with
helping verb spellings.
