Adverbs

• Modify (describe) a verb, adjective, or another
  adverb.
• Most words that end in ly are adverbs.
• Not and nt are always adverbs
• Most adverbs modify verbs.
• If the verb being modified is part of a verb
  phrase, the adjective modifies the whole phrase.
• Example My friends will be gone soon.
• What is the adverb?

Adverbs answer questions

• How?
• When the football was snapped, Troy moved quickly
  and made the tackle.
• When?
• He celebrated after making the play.
• How often?
• Mr. Swartos never assigns too much homework.
• Where?
• It is here.
• To what extent?
• After football Troy was very tired.

• Commonly used to answer questions
• There are 4 of them
• How
• Where
• When
• Why

What is it modifying?

• Adverbs that modify verbs can be anywhere in the
  sentence, they do not need to be near the words
  they modify.
• Adverbs that modify adjectives or other adverbs
  are usually found right before the word they
  modify.
