10
Middle School Peer Leaders Program
  • This program focuses on middle school students
being trained in researching, formulating and
presenting ATOD prevention programs to our grades
4 and 5 elementary students. Each of our five
middle schools has a team of students who are
trained to become specialists in mentoring the
younger peers in ATOD prevention, using the
    researched-based Project Alert program. Each
middle school conducts planned visits to our
twelve elementary schools, as well as also
    implementing programs and distributing materials
on ATOD prevention in their own schools.

Middle School Peer Leaders Program Supervisors

12
High School Peer Education Program
  • This program mirrors the middle school program,
in that it trains high school students in
    researching, formulating and presenting ATOD
prevention programs to our grades 6-8 population.
The continuation of the peer education program
    allows reinforcement of the researched-based
Project Alert program from the perspective of
older peers. Each of our two high schools
conduct planned visits to our five middle
schools, as well as also implementing programs
and distributing materials on ATOD prevention in
    their own schools.

14
Middle School After School Violence Prevention
Club
  • This program is offered at our five middle
schools and focuses on students looking to be
part of an activity that promotes social
awareness and respect for their peers. The
program offers the Project Alert curriculum as
well as recreational activities. The program
supervisors seek at-risk students in order to
    refocus their outlook about personal
decision-making skills, school and future goals
    in their lives.

Elementary School Violence Awareness Initiative
  • This initiative gives the Quincy Public Schools
the capabilities of having a supervisor in every
elementary school that will plan, implement and
assess violence prevention initiatives that focus
on the Second Step curriculum. The supervisors
will serve as a teacher, resource person and
information liaison to staff and parents.

18
QHS Peer Mediation Program
  • The Peer Mediation program at Quincy High
School is designed for students, enabling them to
take part in a process involving a third party
assisting disputants in reaching their own
    negotiated settlement. Approximately fifty
students and fifteen staff members are trained
each year in the mediation process. Trained
students also take part in the planning and
implementation of special programs related to
    ATOD and violence prevention.
  • Program Supervisor - Martha Turner - QHS

19
Elementary School Violence Awareness Nights
  • This program is conducted throughout the school
year at each of our eleven elementary schools.
In collaboration with the Quincy Police
Department officers, parents are presented with
an evening that focuses on the curriculum of
researched-based programs, Second Step and DARE.
Parents are presented with current information
relative to their children and the latest data
that deals with ATOD and violence prevention.

20
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
  • Being part of the Quincy Public Schools
comprehensive health education program, our SDFS
programs will continue to work with parents to
    prevent violence and promote pro-social
development both inside and outside of school.
QPS will continue to teach conflict resolution,
mediation and stress management skills to our
students at various levels. We will also focus
on bringing these skills and information back to
our parents by allowing parents to participate in
school sponsored activities and providing them
with a very accessible communication network with
    our schools.

21
Interfacing
  • The SDFS grant interfaces with other grants and
programs throughout our school system. The
interfacing is overseen by the Social Health
Programs Teams organizational plan that was
adopted in 1999. The Social Health Programs Team
members meet on a consistent basis to determine
how funding, staff and consultants can interface
with each other to provide the highest level of
comprehensive health education in grades K 12.
