4 and 5 elementary students. Each of our five
middle schools has a team of students who are
trained to become specialists in mentoring the
younger peers in ATOD prevention, using the

twelve elementary schools, as well as also
implementing programs and distributing materials
on ATOD prevention in their own schools.

The continuation of the peer education program
allows reinforcement of the researched-based
Project Alert program from the perspective of
older peers. Each of our two high schools

schools, as well as also implementing programs
and distributing materials on ATOD prevention in
their own schools.

take part in a process involving a third party
assisting disputants in reaching their own
negotiated settlement. Approximately fifty
students and fifteen staff members are trained
each year in the mediation process. Trained
students also take part in the planning and
implementation of special programs related to
ATOD and violence prevention. - Program Supervisor - Martha Turner - QHS
19Elementary School Violence Awareness Nights
- This program is conducted throughout the school
year at each of our eleven elementary schools.
In collaboration with the Quincy Police
Department officers, parents are presented with
an evening that focuses on the curriculum of
researched-based programs, Second Step and DARE.
Parents are presented with current information
relative to their children and the latest data
that deals with ATOD and violence prevention.
20PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
- Being part of the Quincy Public Schools
comprehensive health education program, our SDFS
programs will continue to work with parents to
prevent violence and promote pro-social
development both inside and outside of school.
QPS will continue to teach conflict resolution,
mediation and stress management skills to our
students at various levels. We will also focus
on bringing these skills and information back to
our parents by allowing parents to participate in
school sponsored activities and providing them
with a very accessible communication network with
our schools.
21Interfacing
- The SDFS grant interfaces with other grants and
programs throughout our school system. The
interfacing is overseen by the Social Health
Programs Teams organizational plan that was
adopted in 1999. The Social Health Programs Team
members meet on a consistent basis to determine
how funding, staff and consultants can interface
with each other to provide the highest level of
comprehensive health education in grades K 12.
