about changing my major. Im not sure what I am
going to do. Im a college freshman at WVUP.

Thinness as the Problem
  • Thinness is a problem in the United States.
  • You may see it generally from Hollywood, but
young girls and women are victims too.

4
The Media
  • First, the media shows pictures of skinny models,
and the body image a young girl should portray.
  • Through television and magazines, the media
promotes an image of how women should look.

5
Obsession or Not?
  • The obsession with thinness and the media
culture of perfection has had dramatic effects on
the lives of children and adults alike. We are
bombarded by an ideal that few can achieve and it
affects our self-esteem from an early age.

Eating Disorders
  • Anorexia Nervosa-an eating disorder primarily
affecting adolescent girls and young women,
characterized by pathological fear of becoming
fat, distorted body image, excessive dieting, and
    emaciation.
  • Bulimia-a habitual disturbance in eating behavior
mostly affecting young women of normal weight,
characterized by frequent episodes of grossly
excessive food intake followed by self-induced
vomiting to avert weight gain. ltwww.dictionary.co

What I Think
  • The media needs to see what they are pulling on
the young girls of America. Young girls see the
media as the way the world wants the see the real
body image. They let the media take over their
self-esteem. No one person looks the same, which
    is what makes us different.

The Cult of Thinness
  • The Cult of Thinness tells a teen girl or young
woman, how their body image should look. I have
been a victim of the cult of thinness. When I
started my teen years, I would watch the
television and see the young girls have a
beautiful body image. I wasnt a chunky girl,
but I always thought that a thin body image is
what a guy would want me to look like. From the
way I portrayed, I fell into the cult of
thinness. In this essay, I am going to show the
    steps of thinness.

9
  • First, the media shows pictures of skinny models,
and the body image a young girl should portray.
Through television and magazines, the media
promotes an image of how women should look. Teen
girls and young women are specific targets for
the medias message of thinness. A girl will
look at the covers of magazines, and see a
beautiful, young woman. To themselves, they may
think this is what the world wants me to look
    like.

10
  • Second, a young girl will see her favorite models
or actresses portray a certain thinness. The
young girl may see the models or actresses in
movies, magazines, or commercials. The young
girl may see thinness as achieving perfection. I
have certain information from a website. This is
what they had to say, The obsession with
thinness and the media culture of perfection has
had dramatic effects on the lives of children and
adults alike. We are bombarded by an ideal that
few can achieve and it affects our self-esteem
    from an early age. (http//portal.citysoup.ca/)

11
  • As you can see, the information they gave shows a
lot about the cult of thinness. It helps you
see the image and ages, the media wants you to
    see.
  • Then, the teen will look in a mirror and think
she is fat, the diet will come into effect. The
media promotes different ads for diet ads for
diet pills and other weight loss methods the
cult of thinness comes into play. If you look in
magazines, every page you turn seems to have
dieting steps to take. On the front of every
magazine, it has a way to lose weight. The way
they are telling you to lose weight, isnt the
    healthy way.

12
  • Third, the teen has done so much dieting, that an
eating disorder may start. The eating disorder
is the biggest problem in todays American
society. The obsession with thinness and the
media culture of perfection has had dramatic
effects on the lives of children and adults
alike. We are bombarded by an ideal that few can
achieve and it affects our self-esteem from an
    early age. (http//portal.citysoup.ca/)

13
  • The eating disorders may very from person to
person, but the obsession plays a role on the
eating disorder. In a survey of 232 female
undergraduate students at a large Midwestern
university in 1994, Harrison found that about 15
percent of the women met criteria for disordered
eatingsigns of anorexia or bulimia, body
    dissatisfaction, a drive for thinness,
perfectionism and a sense of personal
    ineffectiveness lthttp//www.umich.edugt

14
  • Surveys can show a big part of the problem. They
may help you understand what the real problem is.
Eating disorders are only a problem in the
United States. You barely see them in Europe.
It is more of an American problem.
  • Now everyone is wondering why the young girl is
unhealthy by the way she looks. Girls tend to be
very self-conscious about their bodies, and may
pressure themselves to be thin. You may tell the
young girl they look unhealthy, but they will
think that they look good. This is the media
telling how the body should look.

15
  • The media needs to see what they are pulling on
the young girls of America. Young girls see the
media as the way the world wants to see the real
body image. They let the media take over their
self-esteem of their body image. Young girls and
women shouldnt let the media show how they
should look. No one person looks the same, which
    is what makes us special.
