The Church Shapes Politics and Society

• Clergy-They were church officials, life revolved
  around local church for many people, so they were
  very influential
• Society-Baptism and weddings were some religious
  ceremonies that were key events in peoples lives
• Politics-The church owned a lot of land, so it
  became am major feudal lord. Church officials
  often became political advisors to local lords.

• A group of people who dedicated lives to
  religious order.
• The monks lived apart from society, unlike Friars.

• Francis of Assisi started the Franciscan
• Friars were people who lived and taught with in
  the people and were a part of the society

• Thomas Aquinas developed a philosophical system.
• First universities were built by churches and
  they taught religion, law, medicine, and
  philosophy.
• Students then and now took test to prove they
  knew what they were taught.

  spires were designed to bring people closer to
  god. Everything in the church were works of art.

• A group of English nobleman demanded the Magna
  Carta.

Effects of the Magna Carta

• The Magna Carta was an important step in
  establishing democratic principles in Europe. The
  king would have to obey the laws as well.
• Three demands were that no man shall perform more
  service than a knights fee than is due, no wood
  or property shall be taken from owner, and a man
  shall be placed on trial before committed for a
  crime.

• It inspired nobles to slowly change into
  parliament
• Parliament- A law making body that governs
  England.
• The king had to obey laws of Magna Carta.

• If I had to write a Magna Carta for our classroom
  , three demands I would make would be is to not
  to have to do homework unless student has B or
  below, have free time at least once a week and be
  able to listen music while doing work.

• When the king died he did not have a son to claim
  throne.
• One man that wanted that wanted the throne was
  King of England and the other was Phillip of
  France.
• England had won many major battle throughout the
  war.
• Joan of Arc was a teenage girl that rallied and
  encouraged soldiers to fight.

• In England, the war strengthened power of
  parliament.
• In France, the kings power grew.
• Since king of Frances power grew, democracy
  wouldnt ne used again for another 500 years.

• The plague originally came from Central/Eastern
  Asia.

• Traders unknowingly brought rats to Mediterranean
  ports where it quickly spread through Europe.

What Disease Was It

• The disease was the Bubonic plague.

• The manor system fell apart completely, there
  werent enough people left to work in fields,
  serfs and peasants that were left found there
  skills in high demand.
• In Europe, nearly 2/3 of the population died.

• People who were healthy enough lived and the weak
  died from the disease. The disease doesnt
  effect people as much today.

• In the beginning, a lot of advances dealt with
  the churches. Then, many fair orders were
  demanded in society. War between the English and
  French broke out. Finally, one of the most deadly
  diseases broke out.
