A. Early Setbacks

• Not all colonists supported independence
  Loyalists supported the British
• The British had a powerful navy, well-trained
  soldiers, and the support of Native Americans and
  German mercenaries
• Gen. George Washington is forced to abandon NYC
  in 1776

B. Turning Points

• Gen. Washingtons troops win important battles at
  Trenton and Princeton
• Patriots defeat the British in the Battle of
  Saratoga in 1777
• American victories encourage France to enter into
  a formal alliance with the U.S. in 1778

C. The Long Road to Victory

• American soldiers survive many hardships at
  Valley Forge (1777-1778)
• With the help of the French, Washington is able
  to surround the British at Yorktown, Virginia
• Britain surrenders in 1781

• 4. In 1783, the Treaty of Paris recognized
  American independence, and established the
  Mississippi River as the western border of the
  U.S.
