certification admission

Purpose of TCP Admission
  • Texas Administrative Code
  • Chapter 227-Provisions for Educator Certification
  • Admission required for restricted course
    clearance and meeting student teaching
    eligibility

3
Old School Method (students)
  • Required to attend in-person meeting
  • Students had to call to reserve a spot at the
    meeting
  • Students required to pick up information packets
    for 3
  • Applications were given to students after they
    had attended a meeting
  • Once student completed application, had to
    hand-deliver to COEHD office

7
Old School Method (advisors)
  • Applications were routed to individual advisors
  • Process applications using LMS (Banner) Took up
to 6 screens to view all pertinent information
  • Processing time had to be built into advisors
    administration time
  • Data entry and letter processing

8
Old School Pitfalls (advisors)
  • Finding locations to hold in-person meetings (1.5
hours long 35 meetings a year)
  • Processing one application could take up to 15-20
    minutes
  • Timeliness advisor feedback varied to students
    admitted and denied
  • Fewer person-to-person appointments

9
Old School Method
UTSA uses the Learning Management System called
Bannerto look up student records. Shown here
isthe step-by-step Old School method to
processing apotential candidate.
10
New School Makeover (students)
  • Students view information about teacher cert
    program online anytime, anywhere
  • Students take a quiz that releases the
    application to them
  • Application is automated and online
  • Students can complete the application procedure
    in less then 20 minutes.
  • View the online tutorial (Please be sure to use
    Internet Explorer)

11
New School Makeover (advisors)
  • Advisors can review 10 applications in 15-20
    minutes
  • Timeliness advisors can respond to students
    instantly
  • Data collection is improved due to automation
  • Centralized and accessibility to applications

12
New School Makeover
Taking the elements from the paper application,
we were able to pull information from Banner
onto one screen. An advisor can look for THEA
scores, gpas, and coursework on one Screen
instead of several screens in Banner.
13
New School Makeover
SPACMNT, a screen in Banner, is used as a
common file area. Whenever a transaction is
made on a students application, it is marked
in SPACMNT. SPACMNT can be viewed by several
advisors without having to pull a students
file.
14
New School makeover
When a student applies to the program, the
system creates an application screen, sends a
note to SPACMNT and also emails the advisor.
The email notifies the advisor of the
application, who can then process the
application.
15
New School Makeover
When a decision is made (i.e., cancel, decline,
accept or pending) a comment is placed into
SPACMNT.
16
New School Makeover
When a decision is made (i.e., cancel, decline,
accept or pending) an email is also sent to the
student notifying them of the status of their
application.
