  • There are many properties, such as apartments,
condo complexes and office buildings that feature
ponds and small lakes. Typically, the care and
upkeep of these water features are left to the
property managers. For years the widely accepted
method of caring for these lakes and ponds was to
do nothing until an issue occurred and then
react. While this method has proven effective
over the short term for controlling issues such
as algae blooms or aquatic weed growth, it has
also led to some long term headaches for property
managers. Because these short term solutions do
not address the problems completely they
continually return more aggressively, making them
more and more difficult to control.

  • Today experts are promoting a proactive approach
to pond and lake management that, when applied
properly, can significantly reduce or eliminate
these reoccurring issues. Below are a few steps
you can take to proactively manage your pond or
    lake to keep them healthy.

Water Quality

  • One of the most crucial elements of managing a
lake or pond is maintaining good water quality.
The preferred method to accomplish this is to
encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria,
which feeds on biological wastes in the water.
  • These bacteria can take up nutrients faster and
grow more rapidly than algae and aquatic weeds
this results in the bacteria out competing algae
    and weeds for available food.

  • In order to encourage the growth of good bacteria
the first step is to ensure proper water
aeration. By installing an aeration system in the
bottom of a pond or lake, the water is properly
circulated and oxygenated to encourage the growth
    of beneficial bacteria.
  • In order to get and sustain the levels of
beneficial bacteria needed to maintain clear
water, however, the existing bacteria in the
water must be augmented by adding supplemental
natural bacteria products sold at most pond and
    lake supply stores.

Discouraging Waterfowl
www.truepump.com
  • Most ponds and lakes attract waterfowl, such as
ducks and geese. While their presence can add to
the beauty of a pond or lake, their waste can
contribute to the pollution of the water. This
can pose considerable health risks to both humans
    and animals.
  • Creating vegetated buffers along the edges of a
lake or pond and using repellants that do not
harm the water fowl can help discourage them from
using the water, reducing the health risks to
    humans and animals.

Effective Landscaping

  • The landscaping surrounding a lake or pond can
greatly affect the waters quality. These plants
often act as a filter, helping to reduce or
prevent contaminants from polluting the water.
  • Landscaping around a pond or lake should consist
of vegetation native to the area that doesnt
require artificial fertilizers or chemicals to
    stay green and vibrant.
  • Consulting with an experienced professional at
your local nursery or pond supply store is
    recommended.
