  • Only existed as a branch of General Surgery
    before the Second World War.
  • Largely consisted of the treatment of Fractures.
  • After WW2, returning veterans had a variety of
    permanent injuries, requiring a new
    subspecialty with new knowledge.
  • In 1952, Polio struck North America, affecting
    the baby boomers primarily.

  • Imagine a world, made free for democracy at the
    cost of millions of lives, that now had to deal
    with the highly visible, human cost of that
    victory
  • maimed soldiers,
  • and betrayed by polio, that affected the first
    fruit of that victory
  • young children,
  • born to the very people that had suffered to win
    the war.

    of the western world. Interest was generated in
    the field of medically correctible deformity.

  • - low priority surgery.
  • - little drama.
  • - podiatry, osteopathy, chiropractic
  • and orthopaedics.
