TEST TAKING TIPS
  • Eat a good breakfast that includes both complex
    carbohydrates, fresh fruit, and protein.
  • Come prepared and arrive early for tests.
  • Bring all the materials you will need such as
    pencils and pens, a calculator, a dictionary, and
    a watch. This will help you focus on the task at
    hand.

  • Stay relaxed and confident.
  • Remind yourself that you are well-prepared and
    are going to do well.
  • Dont let yourself become anxious if you feel
    anxious before or during a test take several
    slow, deep breaths to relax.
  • Dont talk to other students before a test
    anxiety is contagious.

  • Be comfortable but alert.
  • Choose a good spot to take the test.
  • Make sure you have room to work.
  • Maintain an upright posture in your seat.

  • Become aware of what you can and cant do during
    the testing session.
  • Can you stand, walk around, or take a stretch
    break?
  • Will you have access to water or can you bring
    their own?
  • Can you chew gum as a stress reducer?

OPEN RESPONSE!
  • Make sure you understand the directions.
  • Use graphic organizers to help analyze the
    question and plan your answers.

TYPES OF QUESTIONS?
  • Single dimension-Looking for a single answer to a
    single question.
  • Scaffold-Usually labeled A, B, or C, You must get
    the first part of the question correct to get the
    second part correct to get the third part
    correct.
  • Two or more relatively independent components-You
    can get any part correct without having to get
    the others correct.

  • Respond to provided information-You are given a
    passage, chart graph, map, or picture and asked
    to respond to or use the information in your
    answer.
  • Student choice-You are given a list of options to
    choose from and usually a specific number of
    choices to make.

MULTI-part Open Response questions.
  • Elementary usually have no more that 2 parts,
    very rarely three.

OPEN RESPONSE ANSWERS!
  • If the answer contains a chart, graph, or map, be
    sure to correctly label all the parts
  • If the question is multi-part, be sure to label
    your answers to match the question.
  • Make sure you have answered all parts of the
    question.
  • Use appropriate, content specific
    vocabulary/technical language in your answer.
  • Know how to use the holistic scoring guide to
    assist you in your answer.
