Title: Underage Drinking Photo Project

1
Underage Drinking Photo Project
Pedro Haro, Project Manager

Photovoice
  • The photovoice concept was developed by Professor
Caroline Wang at the University of Michigan
School of Public Health and Mary Ann Burris from
    the Ford Foundation
  • Photovoice is a process that has been used for
research, education, social change, and the
development of more healthful public policy

3
Photovoice
  • Three main goals
  • To enable people to record and reflect their
    communitys strengths and concerns
  • To promote discussion about important issues
    through group discussions of photographs
  • To educate policy makers and other people in
    charge

Picture This A Snapshot of Health in Contra
Costa County
  • This picture represents my own personal fears.
A child died here on Highway 4, going west. This
is a single lane highway, a trucking route.
People are in a hurry. There are no sidewalks.
The truckers are in a big hurry. This cross
represents a child that died 5 years ago. I worry
about my own children, like I said this picture
is really about my own fears.
    Brenda Dick

5
  • It may not look like they serve great food
here, but they do. You can come here and see the
same old faces. It is a community spot in
downtown Pittsburg where people get together and
    respect each other. Michael Morris

6
  • This is a picture of a park behind my house. I
don't trust my kids going there. There are
bottles and trash. The signs went up last summer,
supposedly the city has no more money to take
    care of the park.
    Nicole Cook

7
Social Reform Children
  • Riis and Hine used photography to expose the
plight of poor immigrants and the exploitation of
child labor in New York (late 19th century).
Hines shocking images resulted in the passing of
    the Child Labor Law.

people in order to minimize need for release
    (including self-shots)
  • Do not photograph anything that you wouldnt want
    others seeing

Photography 101 Light
  • Pay careful attention to the light conditions in
    your photograph
  • Try to place the sun at your back when you are
shooting your photographs. This will help you
avoid backlit subjects with shadowy faces.

Photography 101 Shooting
  • When shooting a photograph, hold the camera
steady and release the shutter carefully
  • Hold the camera with both hands, with elbows
against your body and feet spread apart. This
helps to avoid camera shake or vibration which
    leads to unsharp pictures.
