Title: Sentence Formation

1
Sentence Formation
  • Domain Three of the Writing Assessment

2
Sentence Formation
  • Definition Refers to how well you form effective
    sentences
  • Components
  • Clarity of meaning
  • Complete sentences and/or functional fragments
  • Sentence variation (length, type, beginnings,
    coordination, and subordination)
  • End punctuation

3
Subject
  • The subject is who or what the sentence is
    about.
  • Mr. Turner is giving the Best Man Speech at
    Brett Niinas wedding.

4
Predicate
  • The predicate is what the subject does or what
    happens to the subject.
  • Example The crocodile ate the clock.

5
Predicate
  • The predicate may contain a DIRECT OBJECT that
receives the action of the sentence,
  • Or an INDIRECT OBJECT that tells to whom or for
    whom the action is done.

6
Direct Indirect Objects
7
Types of Punctuation
  • Name punctuation marks frequently used in
    writing
  • Period (.)
  • Question Mark (?)
  • Exclamation Mark (!)
  • Comma (,)
  • Colon ()
  • Semicolon ()

8
Checking Your Understanding

    sentences.

    oven

9
  • Where is the best place to buy a computer
  • I have never been happier in all my life
  • Write three sentences of your own.
  • Circle the subject and underline the
  • predicate.

10
Fragments Run-Ons
  • A sentence fragment is written with
capitalization and end punctuation like it is a
complete sentence, even though it is not.
  • Clauses beginning with after, until, because, or
since are not complete sentences by themselves.
    Ex After I went shopping.
  • Words ending in ing cannot be used as the verb
in a sentence without a helping verb. Ex. The
    girls making a cake.

11
Checking Your Understanding
  • Combine each pair of sentences as complex
    sentences.
  • The tall, thin man wore a yellow raincoat. There
wasnt a cloud in the sky.
  • 2. Selmas pet dog was hungry. Selmas family
had gone away for the day.
