3
Introduction
  • Generally, when we think of deviance, the word
itself has a negative implication, and we usually
think of behaviors such as crime, mental illness,
    alcoholism, prostitution, taking marihuana etc.
However committing a random act of kindness to a
strangerarguably, a form of positive deviance.

4
Brainstorming on choosing the deviant act

5
Rationale for choosing the deviant act
  • Something that might be interesting for me as
    well as for my audience
  • Something save, and without any embarrassing
    consequences
  • Something that is random definitely weird for
    others
  • Method Covert observation

6
Deviant act
  • I asked my brother during the Ramazan month to
sing Jaramazan song by going to apartments of
people in our district whom we didnt know well
    enough
  • He couple of his friends went to 2
    apartments for 2 days.(19.10.06-20.10.06) 1 car
    only once
  • So now you are probably thinking where is the
deviant behavior??? Dont worry youll see

7
Why is this act Deviant?
  • He is 17 years old, but looks like a 20
year-old-guy (so dont think that it was easy for
me to persuade him) his giant friends
  • So even though it is one of our traditions to
sing Jaramazan song for a person of any age,
recently we see only kids coming to our houses
and even that makes some of us irritated if they
    come every ten minute

8
Why did I expect the act to be deviant?
  • People who are old enough and singing
Jaramazan was a common feature of our Kyrgyz
tradition, till the present time where almost
everybody thinks that it is forgotten and being
out of our normal life. And sometimes being able
to be the witness of the tradition that you
didnt even imagine to see again, make people
react differently and consider that act as a
    deviance.

9
Detailed description of the deviant act
  • Day 1- around 6 p.m. my brother with his
friends went to the 2 apartments
  • 1st little girl opened the door, then almost in
a half minute brought some cookies closed
  • 2nd woman (around late 30s), surprised she
stared at them, then when they started barely
singing, she closed the door and in couple
minutes brought some snacks. (They barely sang
just because they didnt expect the woman come
    out)
  • As a result nothing tremendously bad happened
(except the woman, who surprised seeing guys old
    enough )

10
Detailed description of the deviant act
  • Day 2- around 5-7 p.m. my brother with his
friends went to the same 2 apartments
  • 1st one guy opened the door (it turned out that
he is going to the same school where my brother
and his friends go), it was very, very funny and
    strange for him
  • 2nd woman (the same), she looked and recalled
them and probably found it very strange and
    dangerous
  • As a result they were subject to laughing and
subject of being a false accusation

11
Detailed description of the deviant act
  • Day 3- sometime in the evening they went to
sing a song to one of the drivers car

The driver was little bit in bad mood so he just
shouted at them and said that car wasnt a house.
12
Application of sociological concepts
  • Learning perspective
  • This perspective focuses on understanding of
deviance as a result of association with other
members of the group. So woman who opened the
door twice had already assumed that the guys
probably trying to get some kind of information
or checking who is living. Thats why we were
witness of her strange attitude even during the
Jaramazan month, because my brother and his
friends looked very suspicious. And just only
thinking about kind of crime she closed the
    door even not giving anything.
  • Certainly my brother was really mad of me because
we didnt even thought it would turn out like
this. He said he felt like really doing some kind
of deviant. And of course he felt guilty in front
of his friends, since they went with him only
because he asked them. kind of organizing some
    kind of acts

13
Application of sociological concepts
  • Labeling perspective
  • Deviants are those who are labeled by some groups
of people. To my mind, according to this
observation I concluded to myself that there is
no need for some to speak up loudly that another
one is deviant, since my brother even I felt like
labeled, just because of her eyes and face
features and the way she closed the door. But
certainly we cannot apply this concept as a
whole, but only partially. Because usually what
happens, the label leads to the stigma. So my
brother understood, if at the very beginning he
didnt want to do it just because of his age, at
the end he realized how serious everything was.

14
Conclusion
  • My conclusions drawn from the observations
conducted by me, thanks to my brother and his
friends, are that people find those acts that
used to be considered common as a deviance. And
the reason for it is the time changes in the
society, when norms of the community changes with
    the growing generation.
  • And it is obvious that people start accusing
those young people for widespread misbehave.
