• Dylan Klebold 17 years old and Eric Harris 18
  years old
• Killed 12 students and 1 teacher then killed
  themselves
• This brought the incidents of school shootings to
  everyone's attention
• Deaths at schools had occurred before and
  continue after

• Andrew Kehoe a school board member set off two
  explosions at the school killing 45 and wounding

• Violence at schools is not new
• In recent years the number of school shootings
  have increased

• University of Texas. August 1, 1966
• Charles Whitman killed 16 and wounded 31
• This was considered the start of school shootings
• There were 4 school shootings in the 70s
• There were 3 school shootings in the 80s
• There were 13 school shootings in the 90s

School shootings

• In the first two months of 2008 there have been 5
  school shooting incidents
• That is a total of 26 school shootings from
  1-1-2000 until 3-1-2008
• 99 have been killed and 128 wounded since 2000.
  These figures include murder-suicides where only
  the suspect and victim were killed.
• School shooting stats may include death by
  means other than firearms
• Theses figures are from the United States only!

WHY DOES SCHOOL VIOLENCE HAPPEN?

• There is no one reason why school shootings
  occur, and no one type of student who becomes a
  shooter.
• Most attackers engaged in some behavior prior to
  the incident that caused concern or indicated a
  need for help.
• A number of attackers had experienced bullying
  and harassment that was longstanding and severe.
• Many attackers had a history of feeling extremely
  depressed or desperate.
• More than three- fourths of the attackers
  threatened to kill themselves or made suicide
  gestures prior to their attacks.
• Researchers have found that killers do not
  snap. They plan and aquire weapons. They take a
  long , considered, public path towards violence.

Preventing school shootings

• A study by the U.S. Secret Service found that
  when young people plan targeted violence they
  often tell at least one person about the plan and
  obtain weapons they need- usually from their own
  house or a relatives home.
• A significant problem in preventing targeted
  violence is determining how best to respond to
  students who are already known to be in trouble.
• An important effort in prevention may be to
  ensure that young people have opportunities to
  talk and connect with caring adults.

Preventing school shootings

• It is important to decrease barriers that may
  prevent students who have information from coming
  forward.
• Both the schools and police need a thoughtful,
  effective system for handling and analyzing any
  information that is provided.

Foiled or exposed plots

• May 1999 Port Huron Michigan. 2 students planned
  to shoot as many as 154 people they had on a list
  but were arrested after a classmates report to a
  principal
• January 2000 Cupertino CA. A college student was
  arrested after a person developing his
  photographs saw him posing with guns and bombs.
• February 2001 Elmira N.Y. a student planned to
  attack his school but was arrested after students
  told a teacher that he had weapons. He was
  arrested with 14 pipe bombs, 3 smaller bombs and
  2 guns

Exposed plots

• September 2004 Michigan. A student told a friend
  that he planned to attack their school. He was
  arrested with numerous stolen guns
• September 2004 Massachusetts. 4 students planned
  on killing students. 2 of them went to the police
  and reported the plan
• April 2005 Kansas. 5 students were arrested after
  posting threats on My Space
• March 2006 Iowa. A student sent a message to a
  friend that he was going to bring a bomb to
  school. The friend told police who discovered
  bomb making material at the suspects house

• November 2007 La Grange, New York. 2 students
  posted messages on My Space about an attack at
  their school
• October 2007 Philadelphia. A 14 year old was
  arrested after posting messages on My Space
• March 6, 2008 New Jersey. A 22 year old man was
  arrested after speaking to a friend about killing
  students
• ALL THESE PLOTS WERE STOPPED BECAUSE SOMEONE
  SPOKE UP AND TOLD SOMEONE
