What is Social Control?

• Social control comprises all of the
  order-maintaining functions in social groups and
  social settings.
• Social controls monitor, prevent and treat
  deviance.
• Social control is pervasive at all levels of
  social reality.
• Social control is exterior to the individual but
  is internalized as well (for most persons).
