Basic facts

• The Moomins are the central characters in a
  series of books and a comic strip by Finnish
  writer Tove Jansson. They are a family of
  creatures who are white, round and furry in
  appearance, with large snouts that make them
  resemble trolls. The carefree and adventurous
  family live in their house in Moominvalley,
  though in the past their temporary residences
  have included a lighthouse and a theatre. They
  have many adventures along with their many
  friends.
• The Moomins have since been the basis for
  numerous television series, a film and even a
  theme park.

Tove Jansson

• The figure of the Moomintroll appeared first in
  Tove Jansson's political cartoons, where it was
  used as a signature character near the artist's
  name. This "Proto-Moomin" was thin and ugly, with
  a long, narrow nose and devilish tail. Jansson
  said that she had designed the Moomins in her
  youth after she lost a philosophical quarrel
  about Immanuel Kant with one of her brothers, she
  drew "the ugliest creature imaginable" on the
  wall of their WC and wrote under it "Kant". This
  Moomin later gained weight and a more pleasant
  appearance, but in the first Moomin book The
  Moomins and the Great Flood, the
  Immanuel-Kant-Moomin is still perceptible. The
  name of the creature comes from Tove Jansson's
  uncle when she was studying in Stockholm and
  living with her Swedish relations, her uncle
  tried to stop her pilfering food by telling her
  that a "Moomintroll" lived in the kitchen closet
  and breathed cold air down people's necks.

Moomintroll

• Moomintroll is every childs greatest favourite!
  He lives on the topmost floor of the moomin
  house, from where he can climb down to the by
  means of a rope ladder. Moomintroll admires
  Snufkin and lovers to sit and fish with him.
  Moomintroll is in love with Snorkmaiden and at
  times slightly jealous of her attention.

Moominmamma

• Moominmamma is easily recognized by her bright
  red and white apron and her handbag. She is
  always friendly and finds a solution to every
  problem. Moominmamma also is a great cook and
  enjoys preparing her goodies, in particular
  pancakes and raspberry jam.

Moominpappa

• Moominpappa loves the sea and storms. He likes to
  tell stories about his adventures. One thing
  annoys him though he still hasnt completed his
  memories. Perhaps this summer..

Little My

• Little My is small but spunky! She is always up
  to same mischief, and this is why you had better
  look out My is always giving cause to worry the
  inhabitants of the Moominvalley, especially
  Moominmamma.

Snorkmaiden

• Snorkmaiden is a very romantic feminine, and this
  is why she wears a golden ring around her left
  ankle. She is a good friend of Little Mys, even
  though the two are quite different in character.
  Snorkmaiden keeps daydreaming of her prince on a
  white horse.

Snufkin

• Snufkin is the great adventurer of the
  moominvalley with a philosophical attitude to
  life. He spends much of his time fishing and
  playing his harmonica. Snufkin is a sociable
  hermit who is friends with everyone. For the
  winter he wanders down south.
