Review
  • Tell me 5 things you know about Science Fiction
    literature.

13
Objective
  • Wildcats will understand the differences between
science fiction, fantasy and magical realism.

14
Magical Realism and Fantasyin Literature
  • Elements and Connections
  • to the reading

15
The world of fantasy How much of a fantasy buff
are you?
16
What is Fantasy literature?
  • The definition of this fictional genre could be
described as something that contains rudiments
that are not realistic, such as magical powers,
talking animals, etc. Fantasy is often
characterized by a departure from the accepted
rules by which individuals perceive the world
around them it represents that which is
    impossible (unexplained) and outside the
parameters of our known, reality. Make-believe is
what this genre is all about.

17
Another definition
  • Another description of a Fantasy Novel is any
book that contains unrealistic settings, or
magic, often set in a medieval universe, or
    possibly involving mythical beings or
supernatural forms as a primary element of the
plot, theme, or setting. Something magical is
almost always part of fantasy and magic may be
seen in the setting or in the plot. It may even
    be practiced by the characters.

18
See how many of these elements you see in this
Harry Potter montage
19
  • Fantasy usually describes those stories that
could not happen in real life. Fairy tales by
known authors, such as those by Hans Christian
Andersen, are considered modern fantasy and have
no problem relating to young children in fact
most adolescents grow up believing in fantasy.
They wish on candles, wait for tooth fairies,
talk to their stuffed animals and play with
    imaginary friends.

20
Science Fiction vs Modern Fantasy
  • Plot
  • Setting
  • Conflict
  • Characters

Modern Fantasy The major events could not
happen, according to science as we know it
today. Time is usually right now. Place is
usually a realistic place on earth. The
characters solve a problem by using magic or
impossible strategies. Characters are fictional
but they act in ways that make sense in a fantasy
situation.
Science Fiction The major events might really
happen, based on scientific facts that we know to
be true. Time is usually in the near or distant
future. Place can be Earth, or another location
that real scientists theorize may exist. The
characters solve a problem by using actual
scientific data. Characters Characters are
fictional but they act in ways that make sense
from a scientific point of view.
21
MAGICAL REALISM
  • GENRE of literature in which magical elements
appear and interact in an otherwise realistic
    setting
  • A sense of heightened reality where magical and
    miraculous elements appear without seeming
    unnatural or forced

22
Elements of Magical RealismTrying to decide if
youre reading Magical Realism? Use this list to
figure it out!!
  • Fantastic elements that may be plausible but are
    never explained
  • Characters accept the magical elements
  • Many sensory details
  • Extensive use of symbols and imagery
  • Distortion of time time appears to be cyclical
or absent (or collapse in time where the present
    repeats or resembles the past)
  • Inversion of cause and effect
  • Incorporation of legend of folklore
  • Presentation of events from multiple standpoints
or shifts between characters viewpoints and
    internal narration
  • Open-ended conclusion means that the reader never
really knows if the magic or the mundane was
    truthful to the plot

23
Why doesnt anyone question the Magic?
  • The simple act of EXPLAINING the supernatural
would ruin its equality with the conventional
view of reality in other words, we wouldnt be
as willing to believe it anymore!!!

24
Fantasy
  • Fantasy fiction ALSO uses magic and other
supernatural forms as a primary element of plot,
    theme or setting
  • HOWEVER, fantasy fiction uses these elements in
a self-coherent setting which means they take
place in a world set up for such elements, not in
    the real world.
  • Think in terms of Harry Potter he is only
supposed to use his magic in the world of
Hogwartz. In The Chronicles of Narnia, the magic
only exist through the wardrobe and in The
Neverending Story, Sebastians magic only happens
    in the book.

25
FANTASY TRAITS
  • In fantasy fiction, the fantastical
  • elements must
  • Follow rules
  • Contain limits
  • because magical elements must come with prices
or else the story would have no structure.

26
They sound a lot alike...
  • Magical Realism and Fantasy SOUND alike, but
    there are some major differences
  • Fantasies often have a FRAME STORY (this way the
reader does not have to choose between magic and
    reality)
  • Fantasies (as well as Science Fiction) take place
in an ALTERNATE UNIVERSE with its own set of
rules and characteristics. Magical Realism takes
place in a conventional modern world and takes
    away sets of rules.

27
One of the strongest modern examples of Magical
Realism in film is Big Fish
  • Big Fish (2003) The story revolves around a dying
father and his son, who is trying to learn more
about his dad by piecing together the stories he
has gathered over the years. The son winds up
re-creating his father's elusive life in a series
of legends and myths inspired by the few facts he
knows. Through these tales, the son begins to
understand his father's great feats and his great
    failings. Written by Anonymous
  • The magical realism is illustrated in each one
of his dads fantastical stories that occur in a
real world setting. In the end, his dads
funeral is packed with each of the characters in
his many stories the reader is left to question
how much of the stories were real and how much
    were fantasy.

28
From Big Fish Marrying the woman of my
dreams. The daffodil scene is an excellent
example of the powerful imagery and sensory
details in Magical Realism..
29
NOW ITS YOUR TURN!
  • Read the short story by Stephen King and as you
are reading make note of certain elements that
put Here There Be Tygers in the Magical Realism
    genre.
  • How is this story different than the fantasies of
say Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia, or
    The Lord of the Rings?
