Club's History The Kick Off 1 November 18 A
bench in Re Umberto Avenue finds a group of young
students from Liceo D'Azeglio in Turin in need of
something to do. They decide to start a sports
club with the aim of playing football, a sport
started in Great Britain, but developing fast in
Europe. So the story goes - Juventus F.C. was
born in this way - just for fun.
This club, ran by the first president Enrico
Canfari, played against more experienced and
organised teams in the city. However in 1905
Juventus won its first Italian title after a
fascinating competition with two other teams -
Genoa and Milan. Juventus F.C. chose their first
home at D'Armi Square, which is still used today.
For some years Juventus founders wore pink shirts
- the same ones they wore when they started in
1900. The change to the black and white colours
was made in 1903 after a wrong shipment was sent
from England where the new strip was to be made
Despite growing achievements, Juventus were in
the shadow of stronger teams like Provercelli and
Casale until the outbreak of the First World War.
After the war they continued to rise, with
goalkeeper Giacone and the full backs Novo and
Bruno the first to play in the national team
The President was the poet and man of letters
Corrado Corradini, who wrote the club anthem
which remained until the sixties
5
First successIn 1923 Giampiero Combi, one of
the greatest goalkeepers in the world, made his
debut. Edoardo Agnelli, son of the FIAT founder,
was elected the new president of the club and due
to the growing number of fans, Juventus took
possession of a bigger stadium in Marsiglia
Road.
Jeno Karoly, the first real trainer, arrived at
Juventus with the inside left Hirzer, both from
Hungary, to supplement the talents of Combi,
Rosetta, Munerati, Bigatto and Grabbi. In
1925-26, after a fascinating run-in, Juventus won
their second championship
In this glorious period Juventus won five
consecutive championships. Trainer Carlo Carcano
was able to call upon great stars such as Orsi,
Caligaris, Monti, Cesarini, Varglien, Bertolini,
Ferrari and Borel.

6
The legendary periodIn 1947 Giovanni Agnelli
became the president of the Juventus F.C. The
most notable players from this period were Carlo
Parolo, plus the two Danes John Hansen and
Praest.
The hero of the team however, and the holder of
the record for both appearances (444) and goals
(177), was Giampiero Boniperti. Juventus won 2
championships in 1950 and 1952.
By 1955 Umberto Agnelli had taken over the
Presidency from his older brother Giovanni.
Having added the services of Omar Sivori and
John Charles, Juventus won championships in
1958,1960 and 1961. For the first time an Italian
Club became entitled to wear the star after
winning 10 national championships
7
Years of success1967 was another successful
championship year for Juve under the presidency
of Vittore Catella. A long successful period
started with Giampiero Boniperti as president in
1971. During the fifteen years from 1972 to 1986,
Juventus won nine championships and tasted
victory in all the European and Intercontinental
tournaments.
Vycpalek, Parola and Giampiero Boniperti were the
trainers, while on the pitch Juventus featured
such greats as Zoff, Scirea, Tardelli, Cabrini,
Causio, Rosa, Gentile, Furino, Anastasi and
Roberto Bettega today's vice-president
The Italians were complemented by superb
foreigners like Michel Platini who won two
championships, two European Cups, one
Intercontinental Cup, three awards as the top
goal-scorer and three Golden Balls in five years
In 1990 Juventus won the UEFA Cup and the Italian
Cup (with today's president Vittorio Chiusano and
Dino Zoff as trainer) and the UEFA Cup again in
1993.
8
Recent triumphsIn 1994 a new managerial group
of A.Giraudo, Luciano Moggi and Roberto Bettega
(nicknamed "the triad") took over at the head of
Juventus FC. They employed trainer Marcello
Lippi, who immediately guided the team to their
first Championship in nine years. In 1994-95 the
team won the Italian Cup but lost in the final of
the Uefa Cup.
Juventus had won the Champions Cup only once
before - on the tragic night at Heysel against
Liverpool. The final match of the season in Rome
saw Juventus take on Ajax for the title of
European Champions.
An exciting match ended in a 1-1 draw after
extra time. The successful penalty kicks from
Peruzzi, Ferrara, Pessotto, Padovano and Jugovic
sent all Juventus supporters into ecstasy.
In the following year Juventus won the
Intercontinental Cup in Tokyo (Del Piero), the
European Supercup against Paris Saint Germain and
their 24th Scudetto.Sadly the Final of the
Champions League was lost to Borussia Dortmund,
but Lippi bounced back as the club won the
Supercup and their 25th Championship.

On 16th December 1899 a group of fans, gathered
in a room of the Hotel du Nord, and thus formally
established the sports club which had actually
long been active the Milan Football Cricket
Club.The first Club's headquarters were
established in 1899 in the Wineshop at Via
Berchet in Milan. That was the start of the
glorious history of AC Milan, which has written
memorable pages of football history thus becoming
- especially over the last fifteen years - one of
the strongest and most popular clubs in the
world. The rossoneri's past has become a legend,
as well as the men who contributed to make it
Presidents, Coaches and Players. The names of
authoritative people have marked the course of
Milan club's history from Alfred Edwards, the
English founder who, two years after, succeeded
in winning the first Italian Champion title, up
to Silvio Berlusconi, the president who has won
more than anyone else. Highly prestigious
victories attained everywhere in the world
proving the power and the organisation of a
unique group. A top club is also recognisable by
its strategies and choices of its leaders,
especially coaches. Milan's successful history is
indeed also linked to its benches, hosting the
greatest Italian football coaches, such as Gipo
Viani, Nereo Rocco and Nils Liedholm, the masters
of the Sixties Arrigo Sacchi and Fabio Capello,
as their heirs, based their tactics and strategy
on a modern, brilliant and spectacular football.
Sacchi and Capello, in Berlusconi's management
era, won and triumphed providing marvellous
emotions. With Sacchi, Milan won, in four
seasons, a league championship title, the
European Champions Clubs' Cup twice, the
European Supercup twice and the Intercontinental
Cup twice consecutively with Capello four league
championship titles, a European Supercup and a
European Champion Clubs' Cup in five years. Most
recently, besides the current coach Carlo
Ancelotti, symbolising the continuity with the
most successful seasons of Berlusconi's era,
Alberto Zaccheroni in his two-year period led
Milan to win its latest, exciting league
championship title. Milan has become a winning
team in Italy and worldwide also thanks to its
champions, players envied by all teams in the
world Gunnar Gren, Gunnar Nordhal, Nils Liedholm
(the mythical Swedish "Gre-No-Li" trio), the
Uruguayan Juan Alberto Schiaffino, the Brazilian
José Altafini. Then Gianni Rivera, still
considered one of the best Italian football
players ever, accompanied in his extraordinary
play actions by Anquiletti, Trapattoni, Lodetti,
Sormani and Prati. But Rivera's name is also
linked to the name of another great player. When
Rivera won the star's league championship title,
there was a young talented man playing in
defence, Franco Baresi, who taking over the baton
17
from him, would later become the symbol and flag
of the record-holder Milan for twenty years,
fully deserving the title of "Milan's Player of
the Century" in a public survey. That Milan will
be remembered as the "unbeatable" team. In the
Captain Baresi's Milan, extraordinary players,
such as the unequalled Dutch trio of Marco Van
Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard played and
alternated. Over time, further top players
obtained great success, such as the genius from
Montenegro, Dejan Savicevic, the Liberian George
Weah, the Croatian Zvonimir Boban, the French
Marcel Desailly, just to name a few of them.
Those teams could also rely on the most
effective, essential contribution of Italian
champions, such as Carlo Ancelotti, Paolo
Maldini, Mauro Tassotti, Daniele Massaro,
Alessandro Costacurta, Alberigo Evani, Roberto
Donadoni, Filippo Galli, Demetrio Albertini,
Roberto Baggio, Sebastiano Rossi. Next to some of
them, still playing at top levels, there are now
the new stars Massimo Ambrosini, Christian
Abbiati, Serginho, Gennaro Ivan Gattuso and
Andriy Shevchenko, Manuel Rui Costa and Filippo
Inzaghi and among the newest entries, the
outstanding champions Alessandro Nesta and
Rivaldo. The performances of these players
endowed with a strong personality enhance the
style and character of the Club. Technical staff
and players with a winning mentality represent a
true example for the youth approaching football.
Milan is living the present rich of inherited
values and is about to face the future with
ambitious goals. The team presents itself to its
fans with a hundred years football tradition
spent with constant commitment and high
professional skills on the pitch and off it,
ready to start a new season and face new,
exciting challenges.
18
Adriano Galliani
Milan has always been ahead of its time in
interpreting the evolution of the football
phenomenon both nationally and world wide. From
football 'of the past' played at the beginning of
the XXth century as a hobby practised by a few
hundreds enthusiasts up to today's football
representing a global phenomenon followed by
millions of people, the rossoneri colours have
always been absolute protagonists.Since the
beginning of his presidency, Silvio Berlusconi
has provided a further push to the development of
the club. We have pursued this development in the
belief that an essential condition to attain new
victories was to provide the club with such a
structure able to satisfy also the requirements
of our clients media, sponsor companies and
millions of fans. The work done over the last few
years has indeed modified Milan's structure
which, having become definitively more complex
and articulately organised, is today closer to
the real needs of our reference market. Starting
from the entrepreneurial assets of our
shareholder Fininvest, Milan has found its way of
renewing its organisation, its communication
strategy and, above all, its skills of
establishing profitable co-operation
relationships with companies. The new millennium
has opened for Milan with an exciting challenge
which our club is eager to tackle in all its
potential facets the direct management of the
San Siro Stadium through the Consorzio San Siro
2000. The 'Scala of Football', a reference point
for both the city of Milan and the entire
football world, fulfils, also this year, the
expectations inherent to its name. The stands
reserved for our partner companies, the new red
seats, the VIP stand completely renovated, the
new location of media, the new Sky Boxes and the
exclusive Executive Club are just the first steps
along a path aiming at making this stadium the
heart of leisure time for football fans and
families. Starting from this year, San Siro
actually represents an essential element of the
club's commercial strategy the companies
co-operating with us can use the stadium both for
traditional promotional events and as an
exclusive and fascinating meeting place with
their partners. The next step will be a
progressive approaching process towards families.
As a matter of fact, football stadia have for too
long been a place intended solely for fans. The
future of San Siro envisages the realisation of
commercial and catering facilities, in addition
to the more and more frequent activities of
Mgeneration, the club for Under-18 year
olds.Milan's efforts dedicated to the San Siro
Stadium well fit into its commitment, undertaken
in the course of the last seasons, towards the
most important
19
communication media Milan Channel, the TelePiù
digital channel entirely dedicated to the Club
www.acmilan.com, the official web site Forza
Milan!, the monthly magazine published by Panini
Rds, our official radio station b2milan.com, the
new web platform dedicated to those companies
that want to build up business to business
partnerships and mgeneration.it, the web site
dedicated to the Milan community and to
M-generation Clubs members. These new tools have
allowed us to consolidate our brand, already a
world-wide quality symbol, by widening the scope
of our reference public. Our Club's commitment
towards the youth has been further enhanced.
Milan aims at becoming an important partner not
only in the training of new football talents, but
also in their personal growth the Youth Project,
indeed, takes care of every aspect of the
development of young players in the belief that a
great champion is first of all a great man.
Approaching today's Milan means having a flexible
tool able, according to the specific
requirements, both to address a very wide public,
national and international, and target specific
segments. Milan, as a synthesis of sport and
entrepreneurial values, synonymous with success
and quality, is a cross-acting means capable of
addressing all sectors of society

1910Inter win the Italian league for the first
time. The captain of the championship-winning
team is Virgilio Fossati, who several years later
dies in World War I. But even without Fossati,
Inter win their second title in 1920. 1930During
the Fascist era, the club is forced to merge with
the Milanese Unione Sportiva and the team wins
its third Scudetto under the name of Ambrosiana
Inter. 1934Nerazzurri Allemandi, Castellazzi,
Demaria and the legendary Giuseppe Meazza win the
World Cup with the Italian national team in Rome
in 1934. Two years later, Frossi and Locatelli
win the gold medal at the Berlin
Olympics. 1938Inter players Ferraris II,
Ferrari, Locatelli and Meazza are involved in the
Azzurri set-up that wins the 1938 World Cup in
Paris. The same year, Inter win their fourth
Scudetto, while the clubs first Coppa Italia
success comes in 1939. Another league title
arrives in 1940, while the name Ambrosiana is
abandoned in October 1945, after which the club
returns to its previous name Inter.
Giuseppe Meazza plays the last of his 408
official matches in an Inter shirt. The Inter
striker, who attains legend status with his 287
goals for the club, dies in 1979, and a year
later the San Siro stadium is named in his
honour. 1953The Nerazzurri win their sixth
Scudetto in 1953 and repeat the success a year
later thanks to four great protagonists Italian
Benito "Veleno" Lorenzi, Swede Skoglund Dutchman
Wilkes and the stateless Nyers. 1963The "Great
Inter" era begins. The club president is Angelo
Moratti, the coach is Helenio Herrera and the
line-up is unforgettable Sarti, Burgnich,
Facchetti, Bedin, Guarneri, Picchi, Jair,
Mazzola, Milani (Domenghini), Suarez, and  Corso.
The Great Inter side win three Serie A titles (in
1964, 1965 and 1966 the latter is the tenth
Scudetto which allows the club to wear one gold
star on their shirts), two European Cups (in 1964
against Real Madrid and 1965 against Benfica) and
two Intercontinental Cups (in 1964 and 1965, both
against Argentine outfit Independiente). In 1964,
Suarez wins the European championship with the
Spanish national team.
24
1968Burgnich, Domenghini, Facchetti, Guarneri
and Mazzola contribute to the Italian national
team's success at the 1968 European championship
in Rome. Three years later, the Nerazzurri win
their eleventh Scudetto under the guidance of
coach Gianni Invernizzi. 1982After the twelfth
Serie A title won in 1980, Altobelli, Bergomi,
Bordon, Marini and Oriali win the World Cup with
Italy in Madrid in 1982 1989Inter win their
thirteenth Scudetto in 1989, garnering a record
58 points from 34 matches (two points awarded for
a win). A year later at Italia '90, Inter's
German trio of Brehme, Klinsmann and Matthaeus
win the World Cup in Rome. The same year, Lothar
Matthaeus becomes the first Inter player to be
awarded the prestigious European Player of the
Year award. 1991On 22 May 1991, exactly 26 years
since their last international success, Inter
defeat Roma 2-1 on aggregate in the UEFA Cup
final. Matthaeus and Berti score for the
Nerazzurri in the first leg at the Meazza. Inter
defeat Salzburg in the final three years later to
win their second UEFA Cup. 1998Ronaldo is the
first Inter player to win the FIFA World Player
award and the second to win the coveted Ballon
d'Or. Inter lose out on the Scudetto after a long
duel with rivals Juventus, but beat Lazio 3-0 in
Paris to lift their third UEFA Cup. Frenchman
Djorkaeff beats Brazilian Ronaldo in another
prestigious match played in Paris - the 1998
World Cup final. 2000On 12 April, the world is
struck by Ronaldo's injury during the Coppa
Italia final against Lazio. The "Phenomenon"
makes
a return to the pitch and scores again in the
2001/02 season. In the meantime, Nerazzurri
defender Laurent Blanc is part of the French side
that beats Italy in the final of Euro 2000.
25
2001The season concludes with Inter overtaking
AC Milan to finish 5th in the Serie A
championship. During the summer, a "Ronaldo Day"
is held to celebrate the Phenomenon's return to
competitive football. In November, one of Inter's
most legendary players, the unforgettable
full-back Giacinto Facchetti, becomes vice
president of the club. Unfortunately, in
December, Inter fan par excellence and vice
president of the Beneamata Avv. Giuseppe Prisco
passes away two days after his eightieth
birthday. 2002Inter go very close to winning
their fourteenth Scudetto. Leaders going into the
last match of the season and with a one-point
advantage over Juventus, they lose 4-2 away to
Lazio at Rome's Olimpico stadium. The Scudetto
goes to Juventus, while Roma beat Inter into
second place. Just as in 1967, the last match of
the championship is fatal to the Nerazzurri
