Back Injuries
  • Back injuries account for one out of every five
    workplace injuries or illnesses.
  • An employee who has injured their back is very
likely to re-injure it at some point .
  • Even sitting in one position for long periods of
time places stress on the back.

3
  • A low back muscle strain occurs when the muscle
fibers are abnormally stretched or torn.
  • Back Injuries can occur because of poor physical
    condition, stress, or poor posture.

4
How to Prevent Back Injuries?
  • Sleep on your side (w/ knees slightly bent) or
on your back (w/ pillow under knees)
  • Avoid twisting at the waist when carrying or
    lifting a heavy load
  • Carry awkward loads with the heaviest side
    closest to your body
  • Taking frequent short (micro) breaks particularly
    when working in awkward positions

5
  • Hold heavy loads close to you.
  • When you pick something up with jerky movements
    you can injure your back.
  • Pick things up with slow smooth movements using
    your legs.

6
  • Rather than using your back like a crane allow
your legs to do the work by bending at the knees
    while lifting
