4 STAGES OF THE LIFE CYCLE OF A BUTTERFLY

• 1st stage Egg
• 2nd Stage Larva
• 3rd Stage Pupa
• 4th Stage Adult

The Egg Stage

• A butterfly Lays an Egg on a plant

The Larva Stage

• The larva hatches from an egg and eats leaves or
  flowers.
• The larva (caterpillar) will continue to grow
  until the next stage.

The Pupa Stage

• The caterpillar turns into a pupa
• The pupa is also known as the chrysalis or a
  cocoon.
• This is the resting stage

The Adult Stage

• A beautiful, flying adult emerges from the
  chrysalis.
• This adult will continue the cycle.

Where do Butterflies live?

• Butterflies are found all over the world
• They live in all different environments such as
  hot and cold, dry and moist
• They often come out in the Spring and Summer

• Many butterflies are found in tropical
  environments
• Most butterflies migrate south to avoid the cold
  weather

What do butterflies eat?

• Caterpillars eat leaves and plants
• Butterflies can only drink liquid foods
• They drink using their long tongue known as a
  proboscis
• They often drink the nectar from flowers because
  it is nice and sweet Yummy!

Butterflies "taste" with their feet! Butterfly
feet are actually tiny receptors which allow
them to "taste" the food that they are standing
on.
Butterflies fly between 5 and 30 miles an hour
Butterflies cannot fly if their body temperature
is less than 86 degrees
A butterfly can lay up to 500 eggs
There are about 28,000 known butterfly species
throughout the world
