Outline of New Research and Development Testbed
Network JGN II

1. Purpose Pushing forward the following
policies in alliance with Industry, Academy,
Government, Local Community etc. - Promotion
of wide variety of ICT RDs from basic and
fundamental RDs to proof experiments -
Activation of not only domestic and but also
international local communities - Human
resource development through practical research
activities - Survey and practice of an aspect of
future ICT society
2. Feature - Open testbed network for research
and development - IP based network (L2 and L3)
- Maximum transmission speed of main
links20Gbps - 63 domestic access points and
a Japan-US international link with
APAN-Tokyo-IX and Los Angels Abiline-NOC and
Chicago StarLIGHT (Starting from August 1,
2004) - Optical testbed environment with
advanced optical switches for a variety of
high speed network experiments
3. How to use - Refer http//www.jgn.nict.go.jp
- Submit JGN II Research Project Proposal to
jgn2center_at_nict.go.jp - Also ask to
sec_at_allocation.apan.net for international
experiments
4.Operation time period April 2004 to March
2008

Services provided by JGN II at all access points
? Ethernet connection services (Layer 2 services)
for domestic network (1) Access point
connection service Connection with 2 access
points by VLAN (2) Multi-access points
connection service (Available after Oct. 2004)
Connection with multi-access points by same
VLAN ? IP connection services (Layer 3
services) for all networks including
international networks IPv4/v6 dual stack
services among JGN II users, or JGN II users and
users through other research networks such as
APAN
- Connection port in domestic access points-
10/100/1000Base-TX(RJ45) Optical connections
such as 1000BASE-SX/LX will be required to
negotiate in each project.
8
Services provided by JGN II at specific access
points
? OXC Connection Service (Tokyo Otemachi
NTT-C and KDDI, Osaka Dojima, Keihanna, Fukuoka,
Kanazawa) - Connection services by Optical wave
between OXC sites - Interfaces 1Gbps and
10Gbps ? 10G Connection Service (16
access points including Tokyo Otemachi KDDI,
Osaka Dojima, Fukuoka, Tsukuba,
Kanazawa, Keihanna, Okayama and Kita-kyushu) -
10Gbps connection services among sites by
10Gbps-Ether - Connection to other access points
which do not support this service is also
available with some condition such as limited
bandwidth ? Optical Network Testbed Services
(Tokyo Otemachi NTT-C Tsukuba RC, Tokyo
Otemachi NTT-C and KDDI NICT Koganei HQ,
NICT Keihanna Osaka Dojima) - Optical
transmission experiment services among specific
access points

AUP of JGNII
1 User organization must exchange a joint
research agreement with NICT at first time before
using JGN II. 2 When user proposes new projects
after the first experiment project, user will
only be required new project proposal. Exchange a
joint research agreement with NICT will no longer
required. New project partners must exchange a
joint research agreement with NICT each. 3
Following actions are prohibited ?Experiments
without a joint research agreement with NICT
?Experiments with no relation to users research
?Profitable network use ? Use by outsider
without a joint research agreement with NICT
?Interference with network operation and
management ?Violation against public order and
standards of decency ?Improper actions which
NICT(a manager of JGN II) recognizes 4 A TransPAC
user using a Chicago link will be automatically a
JGN II user, and be required to exchange a joint
research agreement with NICT after Aug. 1, 2004.
(Draft Idea) ? NICT does not guarantee quality of
JGN II. ? NICT may collect information necessary
for network operation and management.
