- Named Bluebonnet because it looks like a little
bonnet when you look at it closely. - Became the state flower in 1901.
- Blooms from early
March to early May.
4The State Bird - The Mockingbird
- Gets its name from its ability to mimic the
sounds of other animals. - Gray and White colored.
- Lives year-around across Texas.
5The State Tree - The Pecan Tree
- Texas is the largest producer of native pecans.
- Governor James Hogg made the pecan tree the state
tree in 1919.
6The State Capital - Austin, Texas
- The capital building opened on May 16, 1888.
- It resembles the National Capital except it is 7
feet higher which makes it the tallest capital
building in the U.S.
7The State Flag - The Lone Star Flag
- Adopted as the state flag in 1845 when Texas
became the 28th state. - The blue stands for
loyalty, the white
represents strength,
and the
red is for
bravery. - Texas is called the
Lone Star State
because of the single
star in the flag.

- Adopted by the legislature in 1930.
- The motto comes from the greeting, Tejas.
- East Texas Native Americans used this greeting
when they met the early Spanish explorers. - The Native American word tejas means friends.
