Title: Biosafety and Biohazardous Materials: An Introduction

1
Biosafety and Biohazardous MaterialsAn
Introduction
2
Biosafety at ISU
  • Biosafety
  • The application of knowledge, techniques and
equipment to prevent personal, laboratory and
    environmental exposure to potentially infectious
    agents or biohazards.
  • Biosafety Officer
  • The Biosafety Officer for Iowa State University
is Dr. Betsy Matos. To contact Betsy with a
    question call 294-5359.

3
Bloodborne Pathogen
  • Anyone working with human blood or other
infectious agents including mammalian cell lines
must be enrolled in the bloodborne pathogen
program and take bloodborne pathogen training
    annually.
  • Details about the program can be found in the
Bloodborne Pathogens manual which is on the EHS
    website.

4
Biohazardous Waste Oversight
  • All biohazardous waste should be decontaminated
    before disposal.
  • Be sure to place an X over the biohazard symbol
on biohazard bags before placing them in the
    autoclave.

5
Waste Disposal
  • All biohazardous waste must be disposed of
according to the ISU Sharps and Biohazardous
    Waste Policy.
  • Decontamination or disinfection

6
Sharps Safety
  • Dispose of sharps in a puncture resistant
    container.
  • Do not throw sharps, including plastic pipettes,
    into the trash.

7
Biosafety Cabinets (BSCs)
  • EHS coordinates the annual certification of
    biosafety cabinets.
  • All BSCs used with infectious substances must be
    certified annually.
  • EHS offers training on how to properly use BSCs.

9
Autoclave Validation
  • EHS provides autoclave validation testing (spore
    vials).
  • EHS offers training on how to safely and
    effectively use autoclaves.

10
Biological Materials Inventory
  • A resource for first responders (think firemen)
to identify the location of potentially
    infectious materials in an emergency.
  • Online database with intuitive data entry tools.
    Call EHS 294-5359.

11
Laboratory Equipment Disposal
  • Disposed of through ISU Asset Recovery.
  • All laboratory equipment must be inspected and
approved for disposal by EHS, call 294-5359.

12
Biohazardous Materials
  • Definition- Materials of biological origin that
could potentially cause harm to humans, domestic
or wild animals, plants or the environment.

13
Examples
  • Transgenic animals or plants
  • Human, animal or plant pathogens
  • Biological toxins (such as botulinum toxin)
  • Human blood and certain human body fluids
  • Human or non-human primate cell cultures

14
BioterrorismPotential
  • Bioterrorism use or biological warfare
  • Bacteria i.e. Anthrax
  • Agroterrorism
  • Plant
  • Livestock

15
Regulations
  • Regulations and requirements depend on the type
of biological agent used in the research.

16
USDA
17
ISU Review Committees
  • Institutional Review Board (IRB), Human Subjects
    Committee
  • Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)
  • Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
    (IACUC)
  • Radiation Safety Committee (RSC)

18
Biosafety Level Guidelines
  • CDC and NIH guidelines ensure proper work
    practices.
  • ISU Biosafety
  • Manual is a safety resource.

19
Medical Surveillance
  • Hazard Inventory
  • Vaccinations and testing
  • What to do if exposed.
