Title: Tops
1Tops Bottoms
A literature based science lesson about plants,
and the parts we eat!
2Step 1 Read Tops Bottoms by Janet Stevens.
Step 2 Make sure you have all materials.
Fruits and Vegetables Carrot, Lettuce, Apple
3Step 3 Answer these questions about the book on
a piece of paper
- What did Hare and his family plant in the story?
- Why did bear continue to be upset?
4Did you ever think that when you are eating
fruits and vegetables, you are eating part of a
plant?
But which part?
First, lets review the different parts of a
plant.
5Roots
- Hold the plant in place
- Absorb water and nutrients like a sponge
- Store energy for plant
6Stems
- Carries water and nutrients to leaves
- Holds plant up so that it can reach sunlight
7- Use sunlight to make food for the plant
- Have holes to allow air and water to get in and
out - Helps to make the oxygen, or air that we breathe!
Leaves
8Flowers
- Help to make seeds
- Colors attract bees, butterflies and bats who
pollinate or fertilize the plants
9Fruit
- Holds and protects seeds
- Helps to spread seeds
10Most often we eat roots, stems, leaves and fruits!
Now look at the vegetables on the tray
11On your piece of paper, draw and label the carrot.
Next, circle the part that you think we eat.
Click below on what you think the circled part is
Is it the
root ?
Fruit?
Leaves?
Stem?
Green ?
12On your piece of paper, draw and label the
lettuce.
Next, circle the part that you think we eat.
Click below on what you think the circled part is
Is it the
root ?
Fruit?
Leaves?
Stem?
Green ?
13On your piece of paper, draw and label the apple.
Next, circle the part that you think we eat.
Click below on what you think the circled part is
Is it the
root ?
Fruit?
Leaves?
Stem?
Green ?
14Great Job !
You learned about the parts of plants, and
figured out what part of the plant you are eating
when you have a carrot, lettuce or an apple.
15The next time you are munching on a fruit or
vegetable, I dare you to try and figure out what
part it is. the root? the stem? the
leaves? the fruit?
16You are done!
Now vegge out to some music.. But dont get too
fruity!
