The Great Revolution
  • By Natasha Elfving Gwen Baldwin

2
Introduction
  • In the late 1780s France was going through many
changes. Some of them are included below
  • The peoples crops were a failure because of
    bad weather
  • The price of bread doubled leaving many people
    starving
  • The king put his country in debt because he
borrowed too much money. We will learn about
    these in the next cards.

3
The Meeting of the Estates General
  • The Estates General was an assembly of
representatives from all three classes. The first
meeting was on May 5th, 1789 at the palace of
Versailles. The reason of the meeting was because
the Third Estate wanted to vote by order which is
the idea of everyone having a vote that counts.
This contributes to the rise of democracy because
of the equality wanted. This was the time when
Louis XVI put France in the most financial crisis
ever, Because he would borrow from all over to
help pay for war supplies and also because he was
spending money on his wife Marie Antoinette.

The meeting of ?Estates General
The meeting held the third class discussing
votes that should count.

The Tennis Court Oath
  • The Tennis Court Oath was a protest by the
National Assembly (third class). It was held on
the year of June 1789. The Tennis Court Oath was
held at the palace of Versailles tennis court.
The reason why this is an important event to
remember is because this was the first time the
third class had actually put their foot down they
wanted to have a constitution made and wouldnt
leave until they had one written up.

The tennis court oath was held at the palace of
Versailles on 1789.

The Storming of Bastille
  • Louis XVI tried to make peace by yielding to
National Assemblys demands but he thought
trouble was starting so he sent Swiss troops to
Paris. People made the mistake of thinking the
king was trying was trying to kill common
citizens. On July 14, 1789 a mob attacked the
Bastille prison to steal gunpowder and they
successfully took over the prison. Bastille day
did not contribute to democracy. It did create
was and chaos. Citizens were acting out if
ignorance and fear rather then being part of
desion making. The French people thought this
    symbolized revolution.

6
The March on Versailles
  • On October fifth 1789, 7,00 hungry and angry
women marched to the palace of Versailles for
bread. The women and their families were mostly
in the bourgeoisie category and couldnt afford
the highly re-priced bread. Angry and starving,
they demanded Louis xvi (sixteenth) give them
bread. He promised he would once they returned
home. But once they did he broke his promise.

7
The Reign of Terror
  • Maximillian Robspierre was the leader of the
Reign of Terror. People were sent to the
guillotine (which was a machine that cut off
peoples heads) for very small reasons. About
3,000 people were killed in Paris. Around 85
were peasants or middle class. On July 1795
members of the National Convention ordered for
Robespierre to be arrested. He was charge for
treason and then was sent to the guilotine and
lost his head on July 28, 1794.

The Rise of Napoleon
Napoleons book on the rise of his life.
  • Napoleon Bonaparte was born in 1769. He started
out as a boy who was sent to military school to
the most powerful ruler of history. He faught and
won many battles. He crowned himself emperor in
1894. Then, one year later he lost only one
battle, The Battle of Trafalgar. The last battle
he faught before he die was the Battle Of
Waterloo on June 18, 1815. He later died of
stomach ailment (probably cancer) in 1821.

9
conclusion
  • In conclusion, all of these events were
definitely fatal. They did have a big impact on
many peoples lives. But they also all led to
    democracy in each town.
