What an IPL Does

• IPL does
• Starts the operating system.
• Resets disk storage. This results in increasing
  available disk storage.
• Recognizes new licensed-program products.
• Optionally applies delayed Program Temporary
  Fixes (PTFs).
• Recognizes some changes in system values.
• Unused addresses are returned to the system.

When to IPL

• Regularly scheduled - at least monthly.
• After a power failure or any abnormal end.
• After installed delayed PTFs.
• After installing a new licensed program product
  (LPP).
• A problem with system-- supports direction.
• Your addresses used reaches 90 percent.
• Your system auxiliary storage reaches 95 percent.

• Obsolete libraries used for vendor demos,
  training, or testing.

• Minimum of two Auxiliary Storage Pools (ASPs)
  (ASP 1 and ASP 2).
• ASP 1 only system objects.

• If down due to a power failure, QPWRRSTIPL 1.
  
• The mode switch set to NORMAL.

• Mode switch is set to NORMAL.
• System value QIPLTYPE 0.
• Security Office SECOFR or Security
  Administrator SECADM authority in user profile.

• End all jobs, in all subsystems except QSYS.
• End all subsystems except QSYS.
• Enter command press Enter PWRDWNSYS
  OPTION(IMMED) RESTART(YES IPLA)

Restart Type

• SYS
• Attached hardware devices that can be restarted
  if pending PTF that requires it.
• FULL
• All restart able hardware devices are restarted.
• IPLA - The restart type (SYS or FULL)
• IPL Attributes table stored in AS/400.
• Can change many IPL options without a manual IPL.
