2- Know and use standard essay formatintro, body,
conclusion, thesis, topic sentences. - Avoid chronological terms in your essaynext,
after that, laterwhen possible. They lead you
astray from your argument. - Echo your point (argument) often.
- Use textual evidence (that is, specific
references to evidence from the text of the story
etc., not necessarily quotes per se).
3Danielle Wechselberger English 101B Mr.
Wise September 16, 2003 Essay Exam Sammy,
Updikes chauvinistic main character in A P,
is not honorable as a hero would be and he is not
an anti-hero either. Yes, he believed that the
girls in the small bathing suits were wronged but
that was not his driving force behind quitting
his job. It is evident from the beginning that
Sammy is just killing time at his job. He views
it as boring as empathized in the observation of
the shoppers being like sheep pushing their
carts. Sammy was just looking for a reason to
get out of there and Queenie gave him the
jumping board to do it. However, he did not
quit to save the girls honor or promote his own
beliefs of injustice. He quit to make himself
look good. He was trying to impress Queenie
and her scantily clad friends. But even after he
realized that they hadnt noticed, he had
to continue, regardless of the consequences, to
save face. Sammys actions were not noble but
self-promoting therefore he is not an antihero.
He doesnt swoop in and save the day and he isnt
selfless. He might have been more of an antihero
if he had stopped the manager while the scene was
occurring rather than as an afterthought.
