    by Jackson, Jeb Stuart, and Gen. Lees Seven
    Days Battle on July 26-June2, 1862.

    soldier to the South in Fredericksburg Dec 1863.
    John Lee Hooker took the troops to meet their
    doom at the hand of Jackson (who also died).
  • General Meade and Buford takes over the Union in
    time for Gettysburg and Confederate General
    Picketts charge. (see Encarta)
  • In the West the Union had drunk U.S. Grant who
    did not mind losing a few men in the
    slaughterhouse of war. Gen. Sherman takes over in
    the West with a scorched earth policy for the
    Union.

Election Time
  • War Democrats support Lincoln and ultimately will
    join forces with the Republicans to form the
    Union Party
  • Peace Democrats did not favor Lincoln or war.
  • Copperheads openly opposed war, the draft, and
    Lincoln.
  • Lincoln (Union) v. George McClellan
    (Democrat/Copperhead)
  • Grant the Butcher and his meat grinder warfare
    held out and prevailed pushing Lees troops back
    to Virginia.

Surrender
  • April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Courthouse in
    Virginia Lee officially surrendered.
  • The war is over the rebels our are countrymen
    again.
  • April 14, 1865 Lincoln was assassinated by John
    Wilkes Booth.
  • 600,000 U.S. deaths and 15 billion price tag for
    the conflict.
