Brief History of Department of Homeland Security
(DHS)
  • On March 1, 2003, the immigration functions of
    the INS were transferred to three new bureaus
    within the DHS
  • CIS. US Citizenship and Immigration Services.
    Responsible for most services and applications.
  • ICE. US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
    Responsible for investigations, detention,
    removal, and SEVIS.
  • CBP. US Customs and Border Protection.
    Responsible for immigration inspections as US
    ports of entry (POE), Border Patrol, and Customs.

Introduction What is SEVIS?
  • SEVIS is an electronic database that connects
    schools to the CIS, ICE, and CBP service centers,
    district offices, ports of entry and US Consular
    offices Embassies via the internet.
  • As of February 15, 2003 ALL schools in the United
    States MUST regularly send information through
    SEVIS about their international students using
    this database.
  • This is called SEVIS Reporting

21-Day Reporting
  • Within 21 days of the occurrence of the following
    events
  • Students failure to maintain status
  • Change of students or dependents legal name or
    address
  • Graduation and/or Program Completion Date
  • Disciplinary action taken by the school against
    the student because the student has been
    convicted of a crime
  • Any other information at the request of the SEVIS

30-Day Reporting
  • Within 30 days after the program start date on
    your I-20
  • Whether the student has enrolled, dropped below a
    full course of study without prior authorization,
    or failed to enroll
  • The current address of each enrolled student
  • The start date of the students next semester
