Headlines
  • Headlines should tell you the most important
    information in the lead paragraph.
  • It is the BRIEFEST SUMMARY of a news story.
  • A reader should know what the story is about
    after reading the headline.
  • A headline is NOT the subject of an article such
    as

  • Barack Obama

Headlines
  • It is the summary lead condensed down to a few
    words WHO WHAT
  • It is a little, baby sentence without all the
    extras.
  • It contains the subject of the story WHO
  • (noun person, place or thing)
  • It contains the verb of the story WHAT
  • (action exactly what happened)

What to DO
  • Keep it brief, but make sure it gives reader
    enough info to know what it is about.
  • For once, you get to leave out all that proper
    stuff like articles, conjunctions, pronouns and
    the verb to be.

  • A convicted murderer whose sister-in-law helped
    him escape from a locked ward at the Elgin Mental
    Health Center apparently has fled to Chicago,
    authorities said Wednesday. While the search for
    Tolbert Walls, 31, focused on Chicago where he
    previously lived and was convicted of a 1991
    killing sister-in-law Lisa Mack remained behind
    bars in Kane County. Mack, 38, was ordered held
    on 250,000 bail after she was charged with
    aiding an escape, a felony that carries a maximum
    7-year prison term.

    arrested Lupa Wolf, principal of Transylvania
    Technical High School, in her castle on Howl
    Road. Police Chief Milton Van Helsing charged
    Wolf with disorderly conduct stemming from an
    incident earlier that evening at a concert in the
    town square celebrating this months full moon.
    According to the police report, Wolf grew to
    twice her size, sprouted sharp claws and fangs,
    and began howling so loud that other audience
    members could not hear the string quartet.
    Although Wolf initially resisted arrest and
    hurled several chairs at the officers, Van
    Helsing and several other police officers were
    finally able to subdue her. None of the police
    officers were injured in the scuffle.
