2Biography
- Born in Fuendetodos, Spain on March, 30 1746.
- Studied in Zargosa until moving to Madrid to
study with Anton Raphael Mengs, a popular painter
amongst Spanish royalty. - After being denied entry to the Spanish Royal
Academy twice (1763 and 1766), Goya wins second
prize in a painting competition in Rome (1771). - Goya returns to Zargosa to study with Francisco
Bayeu y Subias. The delicate tonal style for
which he becomes known begins to emerge. - Goya marries the sister of his mentor, Josefa, in
1774. She helps him find work with the Royal
Tapestry Workshop where he will earn the
attention of the Royal Court.

3Royalty
- In 1783, the Count of Floridablanca commissioned
him to paint his portrait. - Goya also became friends with Crown Prince Don
Luis, and lived in his home with him. - He painted the Duke and Dutchess of Osuna and
many other members of royalty including King
Carlos III . - Under the reign of Carlos IV, Goya experiences
his widest popularity with the Royal Court. In
1799 Goya was appointed Spanish Royal Painter. - Goya Painted portraits for the Royal Family and
many other royals.

4The Dreams of Reason Produce Monsters
After complications with high fever leading to
the loss of his hearing, Goya spends five years
recuperating. During this time he reads about the
French Revolution and its philosophy. Etchings
inspired by his readings are published in 1799
under the name Los Caprichos.

5War and Loss
- Goya was influenced heavily by the invasion of
French forces during the Penninsular War from
1808-1814. - Goyas wife dies in 1812 while he is painting
The Charge of the Marmelukes and The Third of
May 1808. These are the preliminary prints in
the series known as The Disasters of War.

- King Ferdinand VII returned to Spain in 1814,
but relations with Goya were not agreeable. Goya
lived with his cousin and her daughter whom he
fell in love with.

6Black Paintings
Witchs Sabbath, c.1820-1823
- In an effort to isolate himself, Goya moved to a
house near Manzanares known as Quinta del Sordo
(House of the Deaf Man). - He lived here from 1819 to 1823. Here he created
a series of paintings (many murals in his home)
with haunting, violent themes known as The Black
Paintings. - Goya left for Bordeaux, France in 1824. He
returned to Spain in 1826 after a period of bad
health, returning shortly to Bordeaux where he
died in 1828.

7The Majas
Two of Goyas most well known paintings are of
the same woman in the same pose. La Maja Desnuda
and La Maja Vestida.
The Nude Maja
Goya Painted The Clothed Maja after outrage in
Spanish Society. He refused to cover the Nude
Maja. Instead, he painted a new piece.

8The Colossus
Painted in 1810, Coloso is commonly thought of as
an allegory of civil war in spain.
Some think Coloso represents the force of Spain
while some think he represents the devastating
force of war.
