1Church Multiplication MovementJerry D. Porter
- Arizona DistrictCrossroads Church of the
Nazarene - Chandler, Arizona - May 30, 2009
2Gods special interest in the poor
- Psalms 823-4 Defend the poor and the fatherless
- Proverbs 1917 Helping the poor is like lending
to God - Exodus 39-10 Jehovah calls the slave nation My
people
3The prophets defend the poor
- Zechariah 79-10 Care for the widow, orphan,
foreigner, and the poor - Isaiah 101-2 Gods judgment will fall on those
who abuse the poor - Amos 84-7 God will judge the wicked who rob the
poor and trample the needy
4Jesus identified with and ministered to the poor
- Matthew 542 Give to those who ask and dont turn
away - Luke 418-19, Luke 720-23 The gospel is preached
to the poor - Luke 1822-27 Difficult for the rich to embrace
the Kingdom
5New Testament church was poor
- James 21-9 We confront church systems that
prefer the wealthy or the powerful - Acts 413 Unlearned men who had been with Jesus
- I Corinthians 126-27 These believers were not
educated, wealthy, or influential
6The Church of the Nazarene emphasizes ministry to
the poor
- Dr. Bresee emphasized that the poor could sit on
the front row. The Glory Barn was such an
emotional show that at times it was in the L.A.
tourist guide! - Redemption and lift
7- I fear wherever riches have in-creased, the
essence of religion has decreased in the same
pro-portion. Therefore, I do not see how it is
possible, in the nature of things, for any
revival of true religion to continue long. For
re-ligion must necessarily produce both industry
and frugality and these cannot but produce
riches. But as riches increase, so will pride,
anger, and love of the world. John Wesley
8The Church of the Nazarene emphasizes ministry to
the poor
- Do we place greater value on converts who are
educated, wealthy, and influential? - Intentional compassionate and social justice
ministry to ALL people. - We GIVE THEM THE CHURCH!
9Our Lords Brother Defined Holiness
- Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and
faultless is this to look after orphans and
widows in their distress and to keep oneself from
being polluted by the world. (James 127 NIV)
10CHURCH MULTIPLICATION MOVEMENT
- Redemption and lift
- Congregations launch new congregations
everywhere with special emphasis on the
poor. - Reach all people groups and tribes
11CHURCH MULTIPLICATION MOVEMENT
- Multiplying believers and churches
- Then the word of God spread, and the number of
the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem,
and a great many of the priests were obedient to
the faith. (Acts 67 NKJV) - Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee,
and Samaria had peace and were edified. And
walking in the fear of the Lord and in the
comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied.
(Acts 931 NKJV)
12CHURCH MULTIPLICATION MOVEMENT
- Led by the Holy Spirit
- They went to Phrygia, and then on through the
region of Galatia. Their plan was to turn west
into Asia province, but the Holy Spirit blocked
that route. So they went to Mysia and tried to go
north to Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus
wouldn't let them go there either. Proceeding on
through Mysia, they went down to the seaport
Troas. (Acts 166-8)
13CHURCH MULTIPLICATION MOVEMENT
- Paul had a vision
- Of a man
- Of Macedonia
- Standing, and
- begging him, "Come over to Macedonia and help
us. (Acts 169 NIV)
14CHURCH MULTIPLICATION MOVEMENT
- Radical and ready obedience
- The dream gave Paul his map. We went to work at
once getting things ready to cross over to
Macedonia. All the pieces had come together. - We know that God wants us to plant a church here
- We knew now for sure that God had called us to
preach the good news to the Europeans.
(Acts 1610 MSG)
15CHURCH MULTIPLICATION MOVEMENT
- Share faith with receptive people
- On the Sabbath, we left the city (Philippi) and
went down along the river where we had heard
there was to be a prayer meeting. We took our
place with the women who had gathered there and
talked with them. One woman, Lydia, was from
Thyatira and a dealer in expensive textiles,
known to be a God-fearing woman. As she listened
with intensity to what was being said, the Master
gave her a trusting heartand she believed!
(Acts 1613-14)
16CHURCH MULTIPLICATION MOVEMENT
- Gather core group in a home
- After she was baptized, along with everyone in
her household, she said in a surge of
hospitality, "If you're confident that I'm in
this with you and believe in the Master truly,
come home with me and be my guests." We
hesitated, but she wouldn't take no for an
answer. (Acts 1615) - My home can be your church!
17CHURCH MULTIPLICATION MOVEMENT
- Church planting sacrifices
- The judges went along with the mob, had Paul and
Silas's clothes ripped off and ordered a public
beating. After beating them black and blue, they
threw them into jail, telling the jailkeeper to
put them under heavy guard so there would be no
chance of escape. He did just thatthrew them
into the maximum security cell in the jail and
clamped leg irons on them. (Acts 1622-24)
18CHURCH MULTIPLICATION MOVEMENT
- We know that we know that we know this is where
God wants us! - Along about midnight, Paul and Silas were at
prayer and singing a robust hymn to God. The
other prisoners couldn't believe their ears.
(Acts 1625)
19CHURCH MULTIPLICATION MOVEMENT
- Gods majestic interventions
- Then, without warning, a huge earthquake! The
jailhouse tottered, every door flew open, all
the prisoners were loose. (Acts 1626)

- Philippi Second Church
- The jailer got a torch and ran inside. Badly
shaken, he collapsed in front of Paul and Silas.
He led them out of the jail and asked, "Sirs,
what do I have to do to be saved, to really
live?" They said, "Put your entire trust in the
Master Jesus. Then you'll live as you were meant
to liveand everyone in your house included!"
