    unintentionally injured.
  • 25 of college students report academic
    consequences of their drinking.
  • College students drink an estimated 4 billion
    cans of beer each year.
  • Each year, college students spend 5.5 billion on
    alcohol (mostly beer).

13
Statistics

    transmitted diseases.
  • 90 of all reported campus rapes occur when
alcohol is being used by either the assailant or
    the victim

14
Promoting Positive Norms
The majority of college students drink an average
of 2 or fewer drinks a week.
Source 2005 Core Alcohol and Drug Survey,
developed under a grant from the U.S. Department
of Education and conducted annually by the Core
Institute, a not-for-profit organization. The
statistics are drawn from a cross-section of
schools from across the country, consisting of
33,379 undergraduate students from 53 colleges in
the United States. All institutions used methods
to insure a random and representative sample of
their respective student bodies. Survey question
Average of drinks you consume a week ____. A
drink is a bottle of beer, a glass of wine, a
wine cooler, a shot glass of liquor, or a mixed
drink.
15
Counterargument If Im old enough to go to war,
I should be old enough to drink.
  • Fact we are legally adults at the age of 18.
  • Marry
  • Vote
  • Adopt children
  • Own and drive a vehicle
  • Have abortions
  • Operate businesses
  • Perform and/or purchase pornography
  • Fly airplanes
  • Hold public office
  • jury duty
  • Be executed
  • Serve in the United States armed services

16
Refutation
  • The law gives 18 year olds many rights, but it
also states that at this age a 18 year old person
is not responsible enough to consume alcohol.
Because of the damages and the poorly made
decisions that are a cause of consuming alcohol,
    such as drinking and driving.

17
Europeans let their teens drink from an early
age, yet the dont have the alcohol-related
problems we do.
  • Three common characteristics
  • Alcohol is a neutral substance.
  • Two equally acceptable choices abstain from
    drinking, or drink in moderation.
  • People learn from an early age about drinking in
moderation. This comes from examples by parents.

18
Refutation
  • In Europe the drinking age is not a factor and
not as important than it is here in the states.
  • The culture has instilled that people in Europe
drink in moderations. The adults set a good
example to the youth by not drinking till they
    are drunk
  • Where here in the US the adult population abuse
drinking and use it as a form of depression and
dont drink in moderation. In turn showing the
youth of this country that people can not be
trusted to know how to hold their liquor

19
Class Activity
  • Alcohol Calorie Calculator
  • Alcohol Cost Calculator
  • Calculate your BAC

20
Conclusion
  • Drinking and Driving result in negative
    consequences
  • Facts
  • Studies
  • Statistics
  • Research
  • Personal stories
