• The Colonists needed candles for light after it
  got dark because they didnt have electric
  lights.
• Sometimes they put candles in chandeliers so a
  few candles could light up the whole room.

• The colonists used candles made of tallow, which
  is rendered animal fat, and a wick in the middle
  made of flax, hemp, or cotton.

How did the colonists make candles?

• Every colonial housewife made a large supply of
  candles in the fall. They had candle rods with
  wicks on them. Then they dipped the wicks in
  iron kettles of boiling water with melted tallow.
  They kept dipping until the candle was thick
  enough. Some used molds made of pewter.

• Candle-making was a very important skill in
  Colonial times. Without candles they couldnt
  read or write at night.
• A colonist who made candles for their job was
  called a chandler.
