Why were candles made?
  • The Colonists needed candles for light after it
    got dark because they didnt have electric
    lights.
  • Sometimes they put candles in chandeliers so a

  • The colonists used candles made of tallow, which
    is rendered animal fat, and a wick in the middle
    made of flax, hemp, or cotton.

How did the colonists make candles?
  • Every colonial housewife made a large supply of
    candles in the fall. They had candle rods with
    wicks on them. Then they dipped the wicks in
    iron kettles of boiling water with melted tallow.
    They kept dipping until the candle was thick
    enough. Some used molds made of pewter.
