5A charcoal sketch is a wonderful beginning for
ideas to use on your Balsa Foam block.
6Remember to fit the design in the correct
proportion of your block. The rubric will ask
you if you used the entire block. Carving a
toothpick or golfball is only using a tiny
portion of the block.
7The thinner the part the more fragile it becomes
8Carve thin legs, arms etc. last and consider just
a contour and not cutting negative space
9The thin legs and tail of the above griffon would
be almost impossible and not recommended
10The round shell and daisy do not fit the
proportion of the block
11All the above designs fit the proportion and
could be used for relief designs
12You could modify the above circular designs into
ovals or elongate the face
13Notice the pattern shows the top, bottom and side
views. You need to draw this on all six sides of
the block.
14You could use this pattern for proportions but
change the figure to a women, clown or cartoon
character that you create.
15You could do a relief carving on each side
