Switch to blekko for Comprehensive Protection
against Spamdexing
  • Blekko

  • Spam entails very low operating cost. This
encourages the spammers to continue with the
menace. blekko puts a spanner in their wheels by
excluding them from its search results. Ths new
age consumer search engine lays extensive focus
on delivery of quality information from the best
sites for a hassle free experience.
  • In the following section we shall deal in detail
with spam, spammers, and spamdexing and how a
judicious choice of search engine can protect us
    from its collective menace.

3
What is Spamdexing?
  • Spamdexing, also known as search engine spam or
search engine poisoning, refers to deliberate
    manipulation of search engine indexes.
  • Indexes are built by automated software programs
called crawlers (also known as ants or spiders).
These spiders visit a website on the World Wide
    Web and scrutinize their contents.
  • They check its Meta tags, read what is written
there, or check the quality of information it
dispenses the websites that links to it and the
    consumer traffic it attracts.

4
  • Armed with all this information, the crawler
returns to the central depository, where the data
is indexed. The crawler at a certain frequency
    (determined by search engine administrators)
returns to the site to check for any addition or
    deletion of information.
  • When people make use of any internet search
engine to find any specific information on the
internet, they in fact are searching through this
index that the search engine has created.
  • As such, these indexes are the real target of
unscrupulous webmasters and spammers. They have a
variety of tools to manipulate the relevance of
the resources indexed by the search engines.
  • This unethical practice of manipulating indexes
to secure a higher ranking in the results
displayed by search engine is referred to as
Black Hat Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
technique. Some common Black Hat SEO practices
    are

5
Keyword Stuffing
  • This is one of the most common techniques of
skewing search engine results by overusing
keywords on the website. Webmasters or web
developers place keywords at strategic points on
the web page to raise the density and count of
    keywords.
  • Tricksters usually put the keywords at the bottom
of the page where majority of visitors are
unlikely to see them. Webmasters generally stuff
their pages with popular keywords that are
thoroughly irrelevant to their own websites.
  • This is done with the express purpose of fooling
both the users and the search engine. For
example, a shoddy organization selling sham
slimming pills may place keywords appropriate for
a reputable dietary counselor. This way, it may
attract a lot of consumers interested in losing
    or gaining weight.
  • This can also be useful to make a page appear to
be relevant for a search engine crawler. Modern
and sophisticated search engine like Blekko have
the analyzing ability to determine if a
particular website has resorted to keyword
    stuffing.

6
Page Stuffing or Page Hijacking
  • This is another popular method used by unethical
webmasters to rob people of a fair search engine
experience. Website owners or web site developers
create a genuine site that scores a high ranking
on Search Engine Return Pages (SERP).
  • The webmaster then duplicates the page to ensure
that both these pages will make it to the top in
the results displayed by a search engine. This
amounts to indulging in unfair practices since it
deprives a rival site from competing on fair
    terms.
  • Major modern search engines have the capability
to compare two different pages and see if they
    have the same content.

7
Hidden or Invisible Text
  • Unrelated hidden text is used by unprofessional
webmasters to eliminate competition and direct
traffic to their website. They use invisible text
that matches the background color of the website.
  • Tiny font sizes are used which are then hidden
within HTML code to trick the search engine
spiders. Some crawlers are programmed to identify
and ignore text that matches the webpages
    background color.

8
Spam Links
  • Link farming refers to having duplicate links
between sites that are of no constructive
purpose. Some crawlers give added weightage to
the links a website has. This is taken advantage
of by dishonest webmasters who fill their pages
    with useless links.
  • Link Farming, or link selling, is a popular Black
Hat SEO technique. Unprofessional and unethical
webmasters indulge in buying and selling of links
to increase the relevancy of their websites.
  • Webmasters also have a collection of webpages
whose sole purpose is to interlink with one
another to boost a pages rank. Wading through
these useless links without finding the relevant
information can be a thoroughly frustrating
    experience for a net user.

9
Buying of Expired Domains
  • Some unethical webmasters keep an eye on domains
that may be approaching their date of expiration.
Once they expire, these are brought by these
tricksters and filled with links directing to
    their own pages.
  • Most internet search engines penalize web sites
that indulge in unethical and unprofessional
tactics to increase their website ranking. This,
unfortunately, has proved to be an ineffective
deterrent since such practices are on the rise.
  • Blekko can be highly effective against the
scourge of Spamdexing because it uses algorithms
that exclude web pages utilizing spamdexing
    tactics.
