  • Jacques Cartier was the first European to reach
    the area now known as Montreal in 1535 search for
    gold.
  • Seven years later, Samuel de Champlain tried to
    create a fur trading post.
  • Expo in 1967 (Expo 67) and the summer Olympics in
    1976
  • The 1995 Quebec referendum was the second
    referendum to ask voters in the Canadian province
    of Quebec whether Quebec should secede from
    Canada and become an independent state.
