• According to Infoplease.com, there are nine major
  religions in the world. These include Judaism,
  Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism,
  Confucianism, Shinto, and Taoism.
• In the United States, most Americans are
  Protestant.  However, the single largest
  Christian organization is the Roman Catholic
  Church.

• The Catholic Church has over 19,000 parishes,
  30,000 diocesan priests, and over 15,000 priests
  vowed to a specific order.
• Approximately 2.7 million students attend
  Catholic school in the U.S. each year. 
• In the U.S., there are approximately 60-70
  million people who were baptized as Catholics.

• Contributions at the parish level are the most
  significant source of income for the Archdiocese.
• Total expenses for the year 2006 were about 311
  million and cover such things are salaries,
  utilities, religious education, administrative
  costs and depreciation.

• In 2006, 62 of Republicans and 47 of Democrats
  reported attending church on a typical weekend.
• According to The Barna Group, women (50) attend
  church more regularly than men (44) reported
  attending church service.

• Regionally speaking, service attendance levels
  are higher in the South and Midwest than in the
  Northeast and West.
• Mainline denominations have been losing
  membership for decades, while conservative
  denominations have been growing.
• The results of a CBS News Poll of nearly 1,000
  U.S. adults conducted in 2006 indicate that 82
  of those surveyed believe in God.  9 believed in
  a higher power.

• Due to a change in feelings towards organized
  religion, many Christians have left their
  congregations.
• In 2006, approximately 40 of Americans who
  changed their religions preferences or moved away
  from religion all together because they disagreed
  with the teachings of their religion.
• Recently, researchers have taken an interest in
  the role religion plays in economic growth. 
  Studies thus far suggest that stronger religious
  beliefs within a country are associated with
  higher rates of economic growth.
• The recent crisis within the Catholic Church
  regarding pedophilia has led many practicing
  Catholics to question their religious beliefs as
  well as the institution.

• Given the recent crisis among Catholic
  parishioners and possible defection, the Catholic
  Church should develop educational programs to
  discuss what the church is doing to address the
  situation. TV has long been considered a strong
  source for learning and should be leveraged to
  get these messages across.
• Religion and the church can be leveraged as a
  cornerstone in the development of morals and
  ethical beliefs in children. Churches wishing to
  attract more young families and children should
  develop programs geared towards this demographic.
  Use the credibility of TV to promote these plans
  at preschools, elementary schools and other
  organized forums for children.

• To promote higher attendance, churches should
  coordinate community focused events and workshops
  that help the population feel comfortable in the
  religious environment. TV advertisements for the
  events should be targeted towards a younger
  demographic as this group tends to be the least
  likely to attend services.
