Who gets it?

• Everybody who has not been vaccinated
• Records of Vaccinations failing
• Normally young children are most susceptible to
  infection

The Virus

• Named Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV)
• Variation of herpes virus
• Once infected, virus stays in system, most often
  latent for extended periods of time
• Found in people of 60 years or more
• VZV DNA found primarily present in large nuerons
  of the Trigeminal Ganglia

• About 5 copies of VZV found on average in
  latently infected neurons

Infection

• Skin contact with Varicella rashes
• Breathing in airborne particles
• Sharing food/drink
• Many instances of infection occur in daycare
  scenarios

Symptoms

• Various shades of red skin lesions
• Fever
• Slight pneumonia

• Death Situations
• Pneumonia
• Respiratory difficulty often requiring
  intubations
• Cardiopulmonary arrest
• Coma
