Title: War to end soon

1
War to end soon!!
  • Forces pulling out after long and bloody war

2
Not that warthe Civil War in the Congo
  • The civil war in Congo is nearly over, after
almost 4 and a half years of vicious fighting.

3
Short History
  • Most of the Democratic Republic of Congo
(formerly known as Zaire) is ruled by President
Laurent Desire Kabila, whose Alliance of
Democratic Forces for the Liberation of
Congo-Zaire (ADFL) overthrew the regime of Mobutu
Sese Seko by armed force in 1997.
  • By the end of 1998, the Government had lost
control of more than one-third of the country's
territory to a rebel organization, the Congolese
Rally for Democracy (RCD), dominated by members
    of the Tutsi ethnic minority.

4
Short History
  •  Rwanda and Uganda invaded Congo in 1998 to back
the rebel movement and to oust Congolese
President Laurent Kabila. Ironically it was
these two countries who propelled him to power
    two years earlier..

5
  • The Lendu and Hema tribes have been fighting over
    land and resources since 1998
  • Long running conflicts between the Lendu and Hema
mirror the relationship between the minority
Tutsis and majority Hutus in nearby Rwanda --
where 800,000 people, mainly Tutsis were killed
    in the 1994 genocide
  • According to Amnesty International, over 50,000
people have been killed in the Congo since 1999,
mainly civilians. Over 500,000 others have been
forced to flee the province of Ituri.

6
  • The recent events in the Congo have been largely
ignored due to the conflict in Iraq. Neither
conflict, however, was as brutal as the Rwandan
    Genocide of 1994.

7
  • Ugandan troops have agreed on 2 April to leave
    the Congo by 24 April.
  • However, a day after the agreement, unknown
soldiers attacked a Roman Catholic mission,
    killing almost 1000.

8
  • The massacre of 3 April was one of the worst in
the history of the Civil War.
  • UN numbers put the number killed at around 350
while eyewitnesses claim over 950 victims.

9
  • Although the UN report concedes only 350 deaths
from the 3 April attack, A massacre is still a
massacre said UN mission spokesperson Hamadoun
    Toure

10
  • Uganda is traditionally close to the Hema, but
its troops have clashed with the Rwandan-backed
Union of Congolese Patriots (UPC), which has
accused Uganda of siding with the Lendu and using
their militia to contain the Hema.
  • Rwanda says it has already withdrawn its tens of
thousands of troops from eastern Congo, but has
threatened to send them back if Uganda does not
keep to its pledge to pull out its forces.
