3Returning to the Source of Health
- In addition to being consistent with modern
science, the HawaiiDiet is guided by universal
values as embodied in traditional Hawaiian
principles.

4- If we could regain the simple understanding of
spirit and nature which was common to our
ancestors, we would once again be able to solve
the devastating epidemic of chronic diseases
which kill most of us. - In the modern, developed world, these major
killer diseases are linked to diet and lifestyle. - Unfortunately, our diets and lifestyles have
significantly changed since ancient times.

5Principles of the HawaiiDiet
- 1. Hawaii
- Hawaii has become a place where people
come for healing. The word "Hawai'i" translated
to English means, "the breath (ha) and water
(wai) of life from God (i)" a perfect formula
for health. -

6- 2. Lokahi "Oneness, unity"
- The central principle to understand is
lokahi. Lokahi literally means "consensus." From
a health perspective it means "harmony,"
"oneness," "wholeness" and that "all things are
connected." In the deepest sense, lokahi means
that "we are connected to everyone and everything
whether person, land, or the larger universe."

7- If we understand this principle, we begin to
understand the wisdom of the ages. For example,
if we understand lokahi, we will realize through
the principle of lokahi, we are connected to that
food.

8Lokahi and Diet
- The concept of lokahi when applied to diet
gives us one of the most fundamental principles
of the Hawaii- Diet. - In the HawaiiDiet, the food table described
as a "Food Mass Index" (SMI or EMI) helps us
select foods that would be more whole.

9Pono
- From the perspective of health, it means
that if we establish pono or "righteousness" in
relation to the laws of the universe that govern
our health, disease will disappear and health
will be restored. This includes eating the right
foods, thinking the right thoughts, and doing the
right things, always with aloha in our hearts and
always mindful of the gifts of life and health
that God has given us.

10- For example, in America, we center our diet
on animal products. What is considered our "main
dish" is beef, pork, chicken, fish, or other
flesh foods. - The traditional ways of eating were always
centered on a starchy staple product that served
as the principal food and an abundance of
vegetables. - If we eat and live in harmony with our
environment according to the traditional cultural
ways of our ancestors, health returns. This is
why the HawaiiDiet is based on traditional
cultural ways of eating.

11Aloha
- The common meaning of aloha is the well
known salutation of "hello," "goodbye," or
"love." In a deeper sense it means "universal
love" the love for everyone and the embracing
of all people, creatures, and things. - Universal love permeates the fundamental
spirit of Hawaiian culture. I prefer to call it a
cultural "tossed salad," where the blend works
well and creates a delightful mix of flavors, yet
each individual cultural flavor remains unique. - If we make these principles a part of our
lives and optimize our health based on the
application of these principles, we may undergo
an inner transformation.

12Mana
- Mana means life force or spiritual energy in
people and things. - Once again this is a universal concept found
in the great civilizations of the world. In
China, it was called "chi." In Japan, it was
called "ki." In India, it was called "prana," and
in the Christian religion it was simply the
"spirit of God in all people and things."

13- For example in Hawaiian tradition, if you
offered food to a passing stranger, you were in
fact offering food to the spirit of God within
that person. - If we regain the understanding that the
ancient Hawaiians possessed of the nature of the
universe, we would see the answer to many
difficult problems that afflict our society
today.

14'Ano 'Ano
- 'Ano 'ano literally means "seed." In the
Hawaii- Diet, there are several underlying
meanings to this word. When used to refer to the
ancient creation myths, it means "the seed of all
things."

15- In most Hawaiian teaching, this concept
describes a method used by some kahunas, or
priests, to help create a reality by planting a
seed of thought in one's mind and nurturing it
into physical reality. It is similar to what we
could now call visualization. - If we are to achieve anything of true value
in this world, we must first be sure that the
plan is pono or "righteous" in the Lord's eyes.

16The seven steps are as follows
- Sit quietly and search your soul, see truly what
it is you desire, then make sure it is in harmony
with God's plan. Pray, and if it is in God's
plan, He will give you what you ask. - Ask for guidance to ensure that what you want is
good for all involved. - State clearly in detail the condition that you
want with words, numbers, data. Be specific about
what you want.

17- See this end result in full detail with color,
sound and action. Remember, ". . . faith is the
substance of things hoped for, the evidence of
things not seen." Hebrews 111 - Feel what it will be like to have this desired
result come to fruition. - Do not tell others about the seed you have
planted fruition. It is enough that God knows. - Pray for the results each day with the words you
have chosen and give gratitude as you see and
feel this result as already accomplished.

18- These seven steps are powerful. Knowing how
to make them work is a great responsibility and
it must only be used with the understanding of
the principles described above lokahi, "we are
all connected" pono, "we must exercise these
powers with righteousness" aloha, "we must do
this work with universal love" and mana, "there
is an unseen life force, i.e., the spirit of God
in everything."

19- Most of all, we must exercise these seven
steps to further worthy objectives that fall
within God's plan, for in the end all else is
meaningless.
