Electronic PortfoliosforStudents
A portfolio is meant to be shown to others. It
is not a personal diary to be put away and
guarded.

What is an Electronic Portfolio?
Electronic portfolios are a technology based form
of authentic student based assessment. They
are a collection of student work over a period of
time. The benefits include clear set standards
or expectations, quick access, easy storage and
increased technology skills.

Steps to Creating
You can use Inspiration to create a storyboard!
  • Step 1 - Getting Ready
  • Learn how to use equipment.
  • Learn how to use software.
  • Step 2 - Planning
  • Create a storyboard or flowchart on paper to plan
what to put on each slide.
  • Will you have a title card? a table of contents
    card?
  • Think about the appearance of your background and
    buttons.
  • Determine how a viewer will navigate through the
    stack.
  • Will the user go through the slides in order from
    beginning to end? (linear), or
  • Will the user be able to choose slides to view in
    any order? (non-linear)
  • Step 3 - Setting Up a Template
  • Create the slides in PowerPoint, including only
    general information.
  • These slides will become the "skeleton" for all
    of your students' portfolios.
  • Add clip art, graphics, borders, etc.
  • Add text boxes
  • Add buttons to link cards.
  • Save your slides to create a template.
  • Step 4 - Creating Individual Portfolios
  • Open the template you created and enter
information (or have the student enter
    information).

Are Electronic Portfolios Practical?
  • Electronic portfolios can be a very practical
    assessment tool depending on
  • the knowledge level of the teacher and the amount
of time they can or are
  • willing to invest.
  • It is easier with students who are used to
    technology and have little problem
  • manipulating the computers, cameras, and
    scanners.
  • The higher the grade level the easier it can be
    achieved.
  • Younger students would have a more difficulty
    creating elaborate electronic portfolios.
  • However with a set template and buddy classes,
  • K-2 students would be able to author their own
  • multi-media portfolios.
