used for infection control is very important to
prevent the spread of infectious agents to others
and/or into the environment
PPE that should be worn for SARS
N-95 Respirator one strap must be above the ear
to crown of head, one strap must be below the
ear to nape of neck.
Gown Gloves Eye Protection N-95 Respirator Hair
Cover (optional)
Removal of PPE is initiated while you are INSIDE
the isolation room!
  • Remove gown and gloves while inside the isolation
    room according to the steps below
  • Break the ties of the gown, or, carefully untie
    the gown take care to NOT contaminate skin or
    clothing (steps 1 2).
  • Using a peeling motion, pull the gown from the
    shoulders, breaking the neckline. The gown will
    begin to turn inside out (steps 3 4).
  • Continue to pull gown off, again inside out, and
    remove your gloves as the gown is pulled over
    your hands (steps 5 6).
  • Then hold the removed gown and gloves away from
    your body and roll into a ball, ensuring that the
    potentially contaminated surface is on the inside
    (step 7).
  • Discard into the waste receptacle in the patient
    room (never reuse!) (step 8).
  • Wash or gel hands (step 9).
  • NOW EXIT THE ISOLATION ROOM!
  • Remove the N-95 respirator according to the steps
    below
  • With both hands, grasp one side of the mask where
    the blue plastic bands are inserted into mask
    (step 10).
  • Pull sharply to separate the blue plastic bands
    from the mask (step 11).
  • Dont try to break the blue plastic bands
    themselves - they will just stretch.
  • DO NOT fold mask or touch mask surfaces after
    removal.
  • Discard mask into waste receptacle (never reuse!)
    (step 12).
  • Immediately after mask removal, wash or gel hands
    (step 13).
  • Remove goggles/protective eyewear and hair cover
    (steps 14 15).
  • If eyewear is disposable, discard into a waste
    receptacle (step 14).
  • If eyewear is reusable, carefully wipe with a
    SaniCloth and allow to dry. If necessary, clean
    lenses with a lens cleaner.
  • Wash or gel hands (step 16).
