• Ponce de Leon set foot near the current St.
  Augustine. He claimed the territory for Spain
  and named it La Florida.

1565

• Menendez takes over the indian village of
  Timucuan and St. Augustine is founded in its
  place.

1586

• Sir Francis Drake attacked and burned down the
  town.

1672

• Castillo de San Marcos took 23 years to build and
  protected the city from at least two attacks.

1740

• General James Oglethorpe of Georgia led an attack
  against the city.

1821

• The U.S. took possession of Florida from Spain.

1824

• Floridas first lighthouse was built at the site
  of an old spanish watertower.

1883

• Mr. Flager, cofounder of the Standard Oil company
  built two hotels and promoted tourism to the
  rich.
