About Halloween

• One story says that the disembodied(???? )
  spirits of the people who had died in the past
  year would come back to search for living bodies
  to possess for the next year. Of course, the
  living people didnt want to be possessed. So on
  the night of October 31, people built huge
  bonfires to frighten the evil spirits. They also
  dressed up as ghosts and made noises around the
  neighborhood so that the spirits who were looking
  for bodies to possess would be frightened away.

The Jack-O-Lantern custom

• A man named Jack had tricked the devil into
  climbing an apple tree. Then he cut a cross in
  the tree trunk and trapped the devil in the
  tree. After Jack died, he couldnt get into
  Heaven because of his mean manner, and he
  couldnt get into to Hell because he played a
  trick on devil. Therefore, Jack had to walk the
  earth endlessly. The devil gave Jack an
  ember(???) to light his way. Jack placed the
  ember inside a hollowed-out turnip(??) in order
  to keep it burning longer. People called turnips
  Jacks lanterns. When immigrants came to
  America, they used pumpkins instead of turnips.
  So the Jack-O-Lantern became a hollowed-out
  pumpkin in America.
