What is HazMat?
  • A substance or material capable of posing
    unreasonable risks to health, safety, or property
    when transported in commerce
  • Listed in hazardous materials table in 49 CFR
    172.101
  • Divided into 9 hazard classes

Rules that Apply
  • Domestic shipments must comply with the USDOT
    hazardous material regulations in Title 49 CFR
    Parts 100-185.
  • Shipments by air must comply with International
    Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods
    Regulations

When Do the Rules Apply
  • Whenever hazardous materials are transported by
    highway, air, rail or water. For example
  • Shipment by common carrier
  • Transport by a private carrier to a job site
  • Anywhere US DOT or NRC rules are in effect

When Training is Required
  • Initial training is required for each new
    employee or employee who changes job functions
    within 90 days.
  • Until training is completed, employees can only
    perform hazmat functions under direct supervision
    of trained person.
  • Refresher training is required every 2 years (per
    IATA).

Who Must Be Trained?
  • Any employee who directly affects hazmat
    transportation safety, including any person who
  • loads, unloads or handles hazmat
  • tests, repairs, modifies, marks or certifies
    packages as meeting hazmat requirements.
  • prepares hazmat for transportation
  • operates a vehicle carrying hazmat
  • is responsible for safety of transporting hazmat

  • Meets test requirements in 173.469 without
    leaking
  • Impact - 9 m (30 ft) drop

  • Certified by a competent authority
  • Shipper must maintain special form certificate on
    file for 1 year from shipment date
