25Understanding Financial Aid
- Financial aid covers the education costs that you
can't pay for. Most financial aid is awarded to
families on the basis of eligibility or need
which is determined by the school you attend
based on information you provide about you and
your family's ability to pay for your education
costs and formulas set by law.
26Understanding Financial Aid
- Financial Need
- Cost of Attendance (COA)- Expected Family
Contribution (EFC)_______________________________
_____ Financial Need
27Understanding Financial Aid
- Lets look at the same student applying for two
colleges - College A
- Cost of Attending (COA) 10,000
- Expected Family Contribution (EFC) -
2,000 - Financial Need 8,000
- College B
- Cost of Attending (COA) 15,000
- Expected Family Contribution (EFC) -
2,000 - Financial Need 13,000
28Understanding Financial Aid
- Financial Need is determined by filing a
- Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
- We will talk more about FAFSA at a later date but
these are filled out after your parents get their
taxes finished - http//www.fafsa.ed.gov/
29Understanding Financial Aid
- In general, there are four types of financial aid
- Grants - given to students judged to have
financial need - Scholarships - based on merit or special
interests - Loans - Government-sponsored student loans are
based on eligibility requirements and must be
repaid - Work-study - provides jobs for students with
financial need to help pay for education expenses
30Understanding Financial Aid
- Scholarships
- Institutional - each college has its own
scholarships (go online or call the financial aid
office of the college) - Local each community has its own scholarships
- Private/Corporate Citizens and corporation also
create scholarships
31Understanding Financial Aid
- Scholarships
- Look at the list of scholarship resources
provided - Use the internet to search but be careful some
sites want to charge you for the search. Use the
free sites provided in your handout - Different Scholarships have different criteria
and application processes - Some are just applications
- Others you have to write essays
- Sometimes you have be interviewed
- There are reference books in the library
32Understanding Financial Aid
- Helpful Hints
- Apply for as many scholarships as you can
- Pay attention to what is asked for in the
application process - Deadlines, Deadlines, Deadlines
33In conclusion
- The college experience is a marathon not a sprint
- The student who earns the degree is not
necessarily the smartest person. It is the
student who can endure without giving up who
earns the degree in the end
